La historia es un viaje por el tiempo. No solo porque permite recuperar un pasado en común para preservar la memoria, también ayuda a situarnos en el presente y a prepararnos para el futuro. El término conmemoración, de contenido histórico, es una bella palabra que convida a una comunidad, a veces tan grande como una nación o la propia humanidad, a recordar, en compañía, un determinado acontecimiento. Esta historia y esta conmemoración son las que ahora nos convocan para una fiesta: el centenario de Fabricato. Esta es una celebración que integra a una de las más grandes textileras e industrias manufactureras del país a lo largo del siglo XX con la Universidad EAFIT, un pariente un poco más joven, de sesenta años, que ha vivido junto a Fabricato una existencia cruzada por la transformación. Bastaría con decir que el alma de una universidad, que es su biblioteca, lleva en el caso de EAFIT el nombre de un fundador y, a la vez, presidente de Fabricato: el ingeniero textil Luis Echavarría Villegas. Pero no solo este fundador de EAFIT estuvo vinculado a Fabricato. Otro de sus fundadores, el ingeniero químico Jorge Iván Rodríguez, hizo su primera experiencia profesional en Fabricato, empresa en la que trabó amistad con un fundador más, quien, además llegaría a ser presidente de la textilera, Jorge Posada Greiffenstein. Otro de los fundadores, Luis Fernando Echavarría Vélez, llegaría a subgerente de Fabricato. En total, cuatro de los dieciocho fundadores de EAFIT estuvieron relacionados de manera directa con la compañía. De ahí que los vínculos tan estrechos se mantengan todavía. También, la compañía norteamericana Burlington Mills, socia de Fabricato en Textiles Panamericanos (Pantex), fue clave en el nacimiento del Instituto Tecnológico, que completaría la razón social de EAF con EAFIT. Y son más los emprendimientos y proyectos cruzados, como el hecho de que la primera aula especial de nuestro centro educativo lleve el nombre de Fabricato. La lista es más larga. Por este motivo, la fiesta centenaria de esta emblemática empresa la sentimos como nuestra. La Universidad EAFIT agradece la confianza depositada en ella, y en especial en su Grupo de Investigación en Historia Empresarial, que con su dedicación durante los dos años corridos entre 2018 y 2019 logró reconstruir y dejar memoria escrita y gráfica de una historia llena de anécdotas, de compromiso urbano y municipal, de generación de empleo y riqueza, de innovación permanente y de palanca del desarrollo económico e industrial del país. En síntesis, y como lo afirman los autores de esta obra conmemorativa, esta es la historia de una empresa que ha construido nación. Aquí confluyen el legado y los logros que han permitido la supervivencia con excelencia de esta importante compañía y que la preparan para otro nuevo siglo.

Ever since the quest for independence between 1810 and 1819, economic thought in Colombia has been shaped by policy debates and characterized by a pragmatic and eclectic approach. Economic thought in Colombia can only be revealed through the exploration of economists’ practices and the role of economic arguments within broader public debate. This history of Colombian economic thought provides a detailed account of major issues that have marked the constant feedback between economic ideas and economic practice in Colombia during the 19th and 20th centuries. This volume is thus a history of the interaction between ideas and policy. Those involved in these debates – politicians, public officials, journalists, and, latterly, professional economists – established direct contact with what can be identified as the centers of production of economic theory (both in Europe and the US) and entered regional and local networks in economics, but were not just importers of ideas or theories. The way in which they read, discussed, transformed and applied economic theories in Colombia makes for a rich environment for the production and implementation of economic policies that drew, diverged and transformed the way economics was understood and used as a source of knowledge for practical concerns. This is why the history of Colombian economic thought does not fit into traditional typologies of economic schools and why it must be understood as part of a political debate and within a political, social and cultural context that demanded specific solutions to urgent social demands. Through the study of what was taught, when and how, at the beginnings of the republican era, and why and how professional economists came to lead public debate and economic policy making in the 20th century, this book explores the foundations of this permanent interaction between theory and practice. This book will be of significant interest to readers of history of economic thought, economic history and the history of Colombian and Latin American economic, political and social life more broadly.

This is the first detailed scholarly study of culture and sociability in Colombia during the period c. 1850 and 1930. Patricia Londoño-Vega gives a vivid picture of some of the factors that reduced social distances in the province of Antioquia during this period of relative harmony and prosperity. She examines hundreds of the groups and voluntary associations which flourished at this time and which brought a growing number of Antioqueños of different social backgrounds together around religious practices and societies, the exercising of charity, a concern for education, and the pursuit of cultural progress. The book describes the crucial role played by religion and the Catholic Church, which underwent considerable growth after the turbulent period of mid-nineteenth century liberal reforms until the end of the conservative era in 1930, and traces the progress of parishes, devotional associations, religious communities, private and public religiosity, and numeros pilanthropic societies, all of which brought about the bonds between the classes. The author examines achievements in education and the emergence of a thriving gamut of literary groups, public libraries, social clubs, and other assciations created to promote public instuction, pedagogy, manners, temperance, 'cultivated' music, and moral improvement. These cultural associations strove towards the longed-for civilisation, as percieved in its prevalent Western connotations. The social intermingling brought about by all these forms of sociability did not of course abolish class distinctions, but did generate a complex and closely integrated society, with an optimistic and constructive view of itself. The description of social and cultural dynamism, set against the background of growing religiiosity, challenges the seldom-discussed assumption that religion slowed down social and cultural modernisation. Primary evidence, drawn from extensive researh in proceedings and reports by groups, associations, periodical publications, statistics, diaries and memoirs, travellers' accounts, books of etiquette, genre literature and other contemporary publications, as well as visual images, particulary photographs, document important topics which have in the past attracted little attention from scholars.
