This open access book provides an alternative theoretical framework of irregular migration that allows to overcome many of the contradictions and theoretical impasses displayed by the majority of approaches in current literature. The analytical framework allows moving from an interpretation biased by methodological nationalism, to a more general systemic interpretation. It explains irregular migration as a structural phenomenon or contemporary society, and why state policies are greatly ineffective in their attempt to control irregular migration. It also explains irregular migration as a diversified phenomenon that relates to the social characteristics of the context, and why states accept irregular migrants. By providing new comparative, empirical, qualitative material which allows to start filling an evident gap in the current research on irregular migration, this book is of interest to graduate students, scholars and policy makers.

La inmigración hacia España a partir de la década de los noventa del siglo pasado ha trascendido al discurso literario con nuevos argumentos y voces. El presente volumen se propone exponer una investigación acerca de las principales tendencias en la narrativa actual sobre el fenómeno inmigratorio, así como un análisis de sus rasgos más específicos. El corpus estudiado incluye tanto la producción de autores españoles como la de nacidos en otros países pero afincados en España. Los diversos ejes temáticos que componen este libro abarcan las indagaciones sobre la influencia de los medios de comunicación en los textos que retratan la inmigración, la novelización de los viajes en patera, la imagen del inmigrante, sus experiencias y percepciones de la sociedad de acogida. La búsqueda de trabajo más allá de las fronteras del propio país, como medio de supervivencia personal y familiar, está en el origen de la mayoría de los movimientos migratorios que suceden en el mundo. Es cierto que existen otras razones como la huida de situaciones de conflictos bélicos tal y como hoy estamos viviendo; la búsqueda de una mayor calidad de vida, o el asentamiento en sociedades más tolerantes. No podemos olvidar otros tipos de migraciones relacionadas con los estudios, la residencia de personas extranjeras jubiladas, o cualquier empresa trasnacional que se instale en el país. Es evidente, pese a que algunos quieran negarlo, que la emigración laboral, en sentido amplio, es una constante de la historia humana. Al igual que el éxodo provocado por las guerras y que dio origen al Estatuto de los refugiados después de la segunda guerra mundial. Una legislación pisoteada con excusas insoportables que ya conocíamos de muchos años atrás: son muchos, tienen costumbres diferentes y podemos perder nuestra identidad, nuestra religión, nuestra cultura. Han conseguido unir a dos grupos que la legislación separaba: inmigrantes y refugiados. Todos son inmigrantes. En alguna ocasión escribí que estábamos viviendo una revolución cuyos protagonistas eran los pobres de la tierra, que al igual que en otras revoluciones pedían libertad, justicia, fraternidad, dignidad e igualdad. Pero se encontraban con una sociedad aburguesada que la única preocupación inmediata era conseguir dinero para sobrevivir siguiendo los parámetros del economicismo imperante. Los movimientos de personas por todo el orbe se producen porque existen razones que los explican y los impulsan. Las civilizaciones o los grupos de población siempre han buscado lugares más favorables para su desarrollo y supervivencia. Tal ha sido la presencia de este fenómeno que el artículo 13 de la Declaración Universal de los Derechos Humanos habla de la libertad de circulación para cualquier hombre o mujer. El texto que ustedes tienen en sus manos habla de estas cuestiones con argumentos sólidos, gracias a sus autores: Concepción Nieto-Morales, María Josefa Vázquez-Fernández y Mohammed Dahiri, empeñados en hacer un estudio riguroso en el que los protagonistas no sean datos estadísticos, sino personas a las que percibimos cercanas. Ese es el objetivo de la segunda parte de esta publicación y sin duda su originalidad por las diversas entrevistas realizadas en algunos de los estamentos que intervienen en el proceso migratorio o en su abrupta interrupción: Fiscalía, Comisaría de policía, profesionales de emergencia en Lesbos, médicos, etc. Continua con las entrevistas realizadas a expatriados o personas que llegan a este país para trabajar o estudiar durante un período determinado. En sus narraciones hay aspectos muy diferentes a las llamadas historias de vida de los inmigrantes, late un sentido mucho más crítico sobre su estancia entre nosotros. Prosigue el estudio con las entrevistas realizadas a inmigrantes residentes en España. Un elenco de logros y dificultades que conmueven por su sencillez y en algún caso por su dureza: “No tiene amigos en su país, ni aquí sabe que puede haber detrás, solo con su mujer y sus hijos, con los demás solo saludarse”. La soledad e incomunicación como expresión de la falta de integración en la comunidad. Los relatos de menores no acompañados muestran la capacidad de estos seres para superar cualquier obstáculo y conseguir el objetivo de llegar a la que se ofrece como tierra prometida desde donde ayudar a sus familias. Luego comprueban con dolor que las dificultades superan a los logros y la presión familiar crece sin límites. También están presentes en este libro el testimonio de cuatro refugiados. Lástima que no sea nuestro país uno de los más acogedores para las personas que huyen de conflictos de todo tipo. Concluye la publicación con el duro testimonio de cuatro mujeres víctimas de la trata. En las páginas que suceden a esta introducción hay seres humanos cuyos orígenes son: Argentina, Taiwán, Marruecos, Cuba, Haití, Brasil, Siria, Rusia, Senegal, Rumanía, Bolivia, Armenia, Uruguay, Perú, Bulgaria, Pakistán, Camerún, Nigeria, Turquía, Congo, Ghana, Guinea, Costa de Marfil, Mali, Sahara, Sierra Leona, Georgia, Colombia… La galería de personas y testimonios de esta obra es impresionante. This book provides a unique, timely and comprehensive insight into Latin American immigrants in Spain. Each chapter uses a demographic framework to examining important topics related to the experiences of Latin American immigrants in Spain, like their rapid acquisition of nationality, their contrasting patterns of migration and settlement compared to other immigrant groups, their labour market experiences before and during the economic recession, their reproductive behaviour before and after settling in Spain, as well as the push and pull factors of what is regarded as one of the single biggest waves of international migration ever experienced by Spain. In the short term at least, the causal relations go from economy to demography. Why are migration policies sometimes heavily contested and high on the political agenda? And why do they, at other moments and in other countries, hardly lead to much public debate? The entrance and settlement of migrants in Western Europe has prompted various political reactions. In some countries anti-immigration parties have gained substantial public support while in others migration policies have been hardly controversial. The Politicisation of Migration examines the differences between seven Western European countries by developing a conceptual framework to empirically explain patterns of politicisation and de-politicisation. The analyses show that over the past decade immigration has been increasingly defined in socio-cultural terms and that it has been receiving less political attention since the economic crisis started in 2007. This book also looks at the role of mainstream parties and political actors in the process of politicisation, and demonstrates how the role of ‘challengers’ is more limited than often assumed.
