En los últimos años, se ha desarrollado un renovado interés por la salud mental, así como por la historia de la psiquiatría y los establecimientos psiquiátricos. En el caso particular del Perú, se vienen implementando una serie de medidas que han sido denominadas la reforma de la salud mental. Es en este escenario que el autor presenta una segunda edición de "Loquerías, manicomios y hospitales psiquiátricos de Lima", libro publicado por primera vez en el año 2012. El texto narra la historia de los establecimientos destinados al cuidado y tratamiento de las personas con padecimientos mentales en la ciudad de Lima, desde los tiempos coloniales hasta la actualidad. A lo largo del relato destacan breves momentos de iluminación, inspirados por una sincera preocupación por el bienestar de aquellas personas, seguidos por largos y lamentables periodos de decadencia y desdén hacia aquellos «carentes de juicio». En esta segunda edición, se amplía el contexto histórico en el que se desarrollaron los hechos, se incluye además un capítulo sobre la reforma de la salud mental, aún en proceso; y también un apéndice sobre la locura en el Virreinato del Perú, publicado originalmente como un artículo en la Revista de Neuro-Psiquiatría en el año 2019.
