Emilia Pardo Bazán Insolación, de Emilia Pardo Bazán (1851-1921), fue en su época una novela escandalosa. El tema se consideraba escabroso y, por añadidura, en ella se ventilaban asuntos como el de la distinta moral sexual para hombres y mujeres. Clarín había sentenciado la novela en sus Paliques: Antipático, poema de una jamona atrasada de caricias, y Pereda había dicho a los lectores de El Imparcial que los protagonistas de Insolación vivían amancebados a la vista del lector, con minuciosos pormenores sobre su manera de pecar. La crítica ha destacado lo que ya en su tiempo algunos entrevieron: el magnífico estudio psicológico del personaje femenino y la calidad literaria de la obra. Emilia Pardo Bazán fue una autora gallega y estudiosa de Galicia. Es conocida por llevar el naturalismo a la literatura española, por sus detalladas descripciones de la realidad y por su papel en la literatura feminista de su época. Su primera novela, Pascual López (1879), es un simple ejercicio de fantasía sin grandes promesas, aunque contiene buenos pasajes descriptivos de romance. Le siguió un relato más llamativo, Un viaje de novios (1881), en el que se intentaba discretamente introducir en España los métodos del realismo francés. El libro causó sensación entre las camarillas literarias, y esta sensación se acrecentó con la aparición de otro cuento naturalista, La tribuna (1885), en el que la influencia de Émile Zola es inconfundible. Mientras tanto, la réplica de la escritora a sus críticos se publicó bajo el título de La cuestion palpitante (1883), una ingeniosa obra de retórica, pero sin especial valor crítico o dialéctico. Lo mejor de la obra de Emilia Pardo Bazán se plasma en Los pazos de Ulloa (1886), la historia dolorosamente exacta de una familia aristocrática decadente. Una continuación, con el significativo título de La madre naturaleza (1887), marca un nuevo avance en el camino del naturalismo. También fue periodista, ensayista y crítica. Murió en Madrid.

Emilia Pardo Bazán, the most prolific and influential Spanish female writer of the nineteenth century, was a very controversial figure, vilified for her embracement of naturalism and her robust feminist stance. When Insolación was published in 1889 it provoked a litany of negative comments and personal insults. This subtle, psychological novel, drawing on many aspects of its author's personal life, deals with the relationship between Asís, a respectable Galician widow, and Pacheco, a feckless womaniser from Andalucía. Although they scarcely know each other, Asís accepts Pacheco's invitation to visit the San Isidro Fair, where a heady cocktail of sun, alcohol and revelry causes her to behave in an uncharacteristic manner. Insolación explores the conflict between Asís's self-recrimination and concern for the 'qué dirán' and her nascent sexuality. Finally, despite her determination to banish Pacheco from her mind and her intention to go back to Galicia, the couple sleep together and decide to marry. The perceived promiscuity of this work of fiction scandalised the reading public as well as many leading critics. Pereda considered Asís's behaviour reprehensible and Clarín dismissed the novel as a pseudo-erotic boutade. Nowadays, Insolación is recognised as an important novel.

The twenty-first-century's turn away from fidelity-based adaptations toward more innovative approaches has allowed adapters from Spain, Argentina, and the United States to draw upon Spain's rich body of nineteenth-century classics to address contemporary concerns about gender, sexuality, race, class, disability, celebrity, immigration, identity, social justice, and domestic violence. This book provides a snapshot of visual adaptations in the first two decades of the new millennium, examining how novelistic material from the past has been remediated for today's viewers through film, television, theater, opera, and the graphic novel. Its theoretical approach refines the binary view of adapters as either honoring or opposing their source texts by positing three types of adaptation strategies: salvaging (which preserves old stories by giving them renewed life for modern audiences), utilizing (which draws upon a pre-existing text for an alternative purpose, building upon the story and creating a shift in emphasis without devaluing the source material), and appropriation (which involves a critique of the source text, often with an attempt to dismantle its authority). Special attention is given to how adapters address audiences that are familiar with the source novels, and those that are not. This examination of the vibrant afterlife of classic literature will be of interest to scholars and educators in the fields of adaptation, media, Spanish literature, cultural studies, performance, and the graphic arts.
