La instauració del franquisme al País Valencià fou un procés de violència, repressió i imposició. Però no tota la població valenciana ho visqué de la mateixa manera: la classe benestant, que havia perdut poder durant la II República espanyola i, sobretot, durant la Guerra Civil, pogué recuperar tot allò que li havia pertangut. Persones com Francisco Javier Planas de Tovar, Joan Flors o Joaquim Manglano, el baró de Càrcer, són, potser, poc conegudes avui dia, però durant la primera postguerra foren de les més influents al País Valencià. A través de l'estudi de les principals institucions locals i provincials de València i de Castelló de la Plana, aquest treball recupera els noms del personal polític del primer franquisme. I a través d'ells, s'analitzen els conflictes entre institucions, entre les diferents faccions de la dreta i entre velles i noves generacions de l'oligarquia.

This book analyzes the promotion of subnational identities undertaken by Spanish fascism and the Franco regime between 1930 and 1975, as well as their patterns of survival, accommodation and adaptation. It examines the proactive attitudes of the various actors committed to the dictatorship – from Falangists to Francoist intellectuals to Catholic conservatives – alongside their repressive or annihilating approach to regional cultures and languages. As in most Fascist regimes between 1922 and 1945, a narrative of the ethnocultural, ethnoterritorial and historic diversity of the nation persisted, with differing degrees of intensity and different tendencies. These discourses and practices were not limited exclusively to the ideological and social sphere of anti-Francoism, and the roots of the ‘State of the Autonomous Communities’, which gave rise to the extension of political autonomy to all Spanish regions from 1978 onwards, date back to the deep structure of the dictatorship, with foundations in demands put forward by the local, provincial and regional elites within later Francoism. The volume is primarily written for scholars and students of Iberian Studies, European Modern and Contemporary History, Cultural Studies, especially those with an interest in memory studies, fascism, nationalism and regionalism, cultural resistance under dictatorship, and transitions from dictatorship to democracy.

This edited collection presents an economic history of Catalonia and its economic crises, from Roman times to the political difficulties of the present day. Un aspecte poc conegut de la repressió franquista al País Valencià fou el sistema penitenciari i el treball forçat. Es fa necessari aprofundir en l’estudi de l’origen i significació dels camps de concentració que van establir els militars franquistes durant la Guerra Civil i en la immediata postguerra, esbrinant els mètodes que van emprar i els objectius polítics i militars que perseguien. En aquest marc teòric s’insereix el present estudi sobre l’impacte del treball forçat a la Vall d’Albaida, que aborda el procés d’institucionalització dels «espais punitius» que va organitzar el franquisme per controlar, aprofitar i «reeducar» l’enorme massa de presoners de guerra que arribaren a capturar durant el conflicte. Es tracta, , d’una contribució historiogràfica amb una important dimensió cívica: rescatar de l’oblit les víctimes d’aquesta forma de violència política.

Este es, pues, el gran mérito de este libro: sacar a la luz muchos acontecimientos de aquellos días, más o menos silenciados.
