La Isla De El Hierro Y El Meridiano Origen written by Juan Tous Meliá and has been published by Instituto de Estudios Canarios this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on with categories.

Longitud. Primer meridiano. Abstract. This study deals with the need, known since Antiquity, of situating in a map the meridian origin in order to set the longitude of any place. In the map of Hecataeus the confine of the world is in the Ocean, beyond the Columns of Hercules (Straits of Gibraltar). Ptolemy established that the first meridian passed to the West of the Macárón Nesói (Fortunate Islands). If we take a look at the medieval cartography and study the limits of the world, we observe that the first known rose of the winds is the one represented in the portulan by Cresques Abraham (1375), where the line Tramontana-Metzodi passes through the Ynsula de lo Fero and defines almost with security the first meridian. The need to establish scientifically the position of the Canary Islands obliged to carry out a series of trips. Among them stands out the one that made Feuillée (1660-1732) in 1724. However, he did not achieve his objective, because the members of the Academie de Sciences criticized the results. Numerous maps of the centuries xvrth to xrxth ha ve as origin the Is1and of El Hierro, but it is actually an increment of another meridian. However, in those centuries it was more important to measurethe longitude than to set the origin, and that problem was resolved in the xvmth century using the method of the clock and the one of the lunar phases. In 1884, after many debates and due to the utilization of both methods, mainly the second one, 26 countries decided the election of Greenwich as the new midday origin. Due to the difficulty of the calculation of the longitude, it was not either easy to set the most westem point of the Canary Islands. In the xvrth century it was the island of La Palma, in the xvnth century, La Restinga (in the island of El Hierro) and in the xvmth century, La Dehesa. In 1848 it was confirmed that Punta Orchilla was the most western point. Keywords: Island of El Hierro. Longitude. First meridian.
