L'ouvrage combine les échelles d'observation macre, et micro, mettant en regard des textes fournissant une appréciation générale de la situation et des grandes tendances à l'œuvre avec d'autres analysant certains des changements en cours et le vécu des populations. Enfin, le fait de faire appel à des universitaires connus, dont certains ayant consacré toute une bonne partie de leur vie à l'étude du Vietnam, et à de jeunes chercheurs, venant souvent tout juste d'achever leur thèse de doctorat, a procédé d'une volonté délibérée de démontrer que la riche et vieille tradition des études vietnamiennes francophones se perpétue et que la relève s'opère. Cela nous a semblé être la meilleure manière de rendre hommage à Pierre Gourou, homme remarquable et scientifique d'exception, auquel bon nombre des auteurs de cet ouvrage sont redevables, et qui a su transmettre aux générations de chercheurs s'étant nourri de ses enseignements sa passion d'un Vietnam auquel il était très attaché.
