Zigzagging through six locations on the edges of the German-speaking world, exploring them through politics, architecture, literature, film, art, music, food, and history. “Zickzack” is the German word for “zigzag”: hopping around, moving back and forth, never following a straight line, avoiding the monotony of one thing following another. Zickzack is William Firebrace’s zigzagging exploration of six places on the edges of the German-speaking world. Deploying essays, narration, conversations, descriptions, and lists, Firebrace celebrates locations on defined and undefined borders, where cultures, languages, and histories mix. In his nonlinear wandering, he touches on ethnicity, topography, history, film, literature, myth, languages, and gastronomy. These locales are not the famous cities of Berlin, Vienna, and Zurich, but areas that straddle countries, geographies, and influences. Two are within Germany itself, one lies on (and over) the border with Poland, and three were once within the loose German cultural zone but now belong to other countries. Firebrace explores Strasbourg, capital of Alsace and part of a long-running territorial dispute between France and Germany; Königsberg, which spent some of the twentieth century as Kaliningrad; and Görlitz and Zgorcelec, twin cities on either side of a river. He plays hopscotch with churches in Backstein and takes a train trip past cities with double names—Sterzing-Vipiteno, Brixen-Bressanone, Klausen-Chiusa, signs of the double culture, where everything happens twice but in a slightly different way. In the zigzags of the German-speaking world, the original culture sometimes survives, sometimes is deliberately destroyed, sometimes merges with other cultures, and often, if submerged, resurfaces in a different form.

The Serbian-Orthodox church of the Holy Trinity and Saint Spyridon, built in the mid-Nineteenth century, shows the solid byzantine influence. Go inside for a look at its beautiful frescoes and icons. The Israelite Temple of Trieste, just over a century old, is Italy's largest synagogue. The Trieste Cathedral, dedicated to the city's patron saint, San Guisto (Saint Justus), who was martyred at the beginning of the Fourth Century, was initially built in the Sixth Century on Roman ruins. It is adjacent to a castle of the same name. Walk on its ramparts for an excellent view of the city and its surroundings. There is no shortage of other churches and museums to visit. This is a guide to a trip in the Friuli region of Italy: passing through Grado, Lignano, Aquileia, Trieste, Pordenone, Udine, and touching the mountains of Friuli, the Carnia, Tarvisio, and Sequals. Il Libro “ITER PARA TUTUM” è stato scritto dall’autore per descrivere le sue montagne: l’Appennino, le Alpi, i monti e i deserti dell’Africa compreso il Kilimangiaro, il Deserto del Ténéré (il nulla del nulla) e l’Erg Chec un deserto ancora sconosciuto tra Algeria-Mali-Mauritania, dove si trova l’unico pozzo esistente, e dove è stata trovata l’acqua assolutamente necessaria per la sopravvivenza dell’autore e della sua spedizione nell’anno 1989. Il libro è ripartito in tre parti: la prima dedicata alle scalate dell’autore sulle Dolomiti, in Valle d’Aosta e al lungo soggiorno durato ben quaranta anni sul Monte Rosa (Dufour, Zumstein, Castore, Breithorn) dove quest’ultimo ha raggiunto la vetta del Cervino con la Guida Alpina Ferdinando Gaspard e Lino Tamone, col quale è stato anche sul Monte Bianco (Vetta a 4.810 m.slm, Petit Anguille Verte, Tour Ronde, Les Piramides Calcaires e Pic Adolph). Narra dei vari tentativi dell’autore di arrivare in vetta al Monte Cervino, che ha poi finalmente raggiunto l’otto settembre 1971, con la Guida Alpina Ferdinando Gaspard da Pecou-Vatournenche. Ultimamente è diventato membro del Club “Amici del Monte Cervino” nel 150° anno della sua conquista e ha chiuso la sua carriera alpinistica andando in cima al Monviso, dove è stato fondato il Club Alpino Italiano del quale è stato membro. Nella sua lunga vita ha scalato quasi tutte le montagne dell’Appennino al quale è dedicata la seconda parte del suo libro. La terza è dedicata a montagne quali il Kilimangiaro, i Monti Bagzans e una buona conoscenza del Demavend in Iran che coi suoi i quasi 6.000 msl.m. è la più alta vetta vulcanica dell’Iran.
