This book fills the Iberian linguistic and geographical gap in Arthurian studies, replacing the now-outdated work by William J. Entwistle (1925). It covers Arthurian material in all the major Peninsular Romance languages (Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, Galician); it follows the spread of Arthurian material overseas with the seaborne expansion of Spain and Portugal from Iberia into America and Asia in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries; and, as well as examining the specifically Arthurian texts themselves, it traces the continued influence of the medieval Arthurian material and its impact on the society, literature and culture of the Golden Age and beyond, including its presence in Don Quixote, the influential Spanish Arthurian-inspired romance Amadís de Gaula, and in Spanish ballads. Such was its influence that we find an indigenous American woman called ‘Iseo’ (Iseult); and an Arthurian story appeared in an indigenous language of the Philippines, Tagalog, as late as the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Studies of conflict in medieval history and related disciplines have recently come to focus on wars, feuds, rebellions, and other violent matters. While those issues are present here, to form a backdrop, this volume brings other forms of conflict in this period to the fore. With these assembled essays on conflict and collaboration in the Iberian Peninsula, it provides an insight into key aspects of the historical experience of the Iberian kingdoms during the Middle Ages. Ranging in focus from the fall of the Visigothic kingdom and the arrival of significant numbers of Berber settlers to the functioning of the Spanish Inquisition right at the end of the Middle Ages, the articles gathered here look both at cross-ethnic and interreligious meetings in hostility or fruitful cohabitation. The book does not, however, forget intra-communal relations, and consideration is given to the mechanisms within religious and ethnic groupings by which conflict was channeled and, occasionally, collaboration could ensue.

El Espéculo o Espejo de todos los derechos se nos ha transmitido en cuatro manuscritos, dos de ellos en la Biblioteca Nacional, uno en la Biblioteca del Palacio Real y el cuarto en la Biblioteca de la Real Academia de la Historia. A lo anterior se suman tres ediciones, una de ellas de la Real Academia de la Historia de 1836, que es la utilizada en este volumen. Consta de un prólogo al que siguen 2.500 leyes agrupadas en 182 títulos y estos en cinco libros. El libro I trata del concepto de ley, sus características y quién tiene la potestad de dar leyes, la fe católica y los artículos de la fe. El libro II trata del derecho real: el derecho del rey, de la reina, de sus hijos, del patrimonio real (castillos, heredades, etc.). El libro III trata de los deberes para con el rey: acudir cuando él llame, ir donde él envíe y principalmente el servicio militar. El libro IV, trata del personal que interviene en los juicios: jueces, demandantes y demandados, testigos, procuradores y abogados, consejeros, pesquisidores, escribanos y selladores. Finalmente, el libro V trata del desarrollo del proceso judicial: emplazamientos, sospechas contra los jueces, asentamientos, defensiones, prescripción, ferias, demanda y contestación a la demanda, pruebas y alzadas.

En 1985, José Fradejas Lebrero publicó uno de sus trabajos más leídos y consultados, Novela corta del siglo XVI, que contenía la edición de una treintena de narraciones breves precedidas de un riquísimo estudio preliminar. Entendiendo de forma lata el concepto de ‘novela corta’, la principal novedad de este trabajo es que Fradejas adelantó el nacimiento del género apadrinado por Cervantes en 1613 a una época apenas considerada, en la que incluyó textos de Tamariz, Ercilla, Guevara o Gracián Dantisco. En el cuarto de siglo que estuvo dedicado a ampliar el conjunto hasta llegar a este libro iné-dito (la última monografía en la que estuvo trabajando), Fradejas triplicó el número de narraciones breves que había analizado. No obstante, no puede entenderse este como un volumen totalizador, pues no llegó a estudiar todas las novelas cortas del siglo XVI. Con todo, el volumen permite vislumbrar parte de la urdimbre para elaborar una historia sobre la prosa narrativa del quinientos, donde los textos son colocados en el diálogo que mantienen con la tradición. En Trayectoria de la novela corta en el siglo XVI se refleja el ideal de texto presente que siempre acompañó a Fradejas; sus continuas lecturas iban enriqueciendo asuntos ya por él abordados y permitiendo que descubriese otros nuevos. A su modo, este libro, fruto del sostenido compromiso investigador que mantuvo hasta el último de sus días, es el resultado de una lectura sistemática y ordenada sobre la novela corta del siglo XVI que Fradejas inició desde que empezó a abrir camino en el ancho campo de la Filología.

Annotation Since the publication of the still very valuable Biblioteca histórica de la filología by Cipriano Muñoz y Manzano, conde de la Viñaza, (Madrid, 1893), our knowledge of the history of the study of the Spanish language has grown considerably. It has been the purpose of BICRES I (from the beginnings to 1600), published in 1994 in the same series, to bring already available bibliographical information together with the more recent research findings, scattered in many places, books and articles and published during the past one hundred years. Now, the second volume, covering the years from 1601 to 1700, has been published, according to the same principles as the first one. Years of work in the major librairies of Spain and other European countries have gone into this new bibliography in order to offer as exhaustive as possible a description of all Spanish grammars and dictionaries, histories of the Spanish language as well studies devoted to particular facets of its evolution in the 17th century. BICRES II brings together in chronological order close to 1,300 titles. Access to the bibliographical information is facilitated by several detailed indexes, such as author index, short title index, index of places of production, index of printers and publishers, and a index of locations of the books described. Desde la publicación de la muy meritoria y aún hoy útil Biblioteca histórica de la filología castellana (Madrid, 1893) de Cipriano Muñoz y Manzano, conde de la Viñaza, nuestros cono-cimientos sobre la historia de la lingüística española se han ensanchado considerable-mente. Fue el propósito de BICRES I ( desde los comienzos hasta 1600 ), que se publicó en 1994 en esta misma serie, sumar, a los datos bibliográficos conocidos, la información más reciente aparecida durante los últimos cien años en los más diversos lugares. BICRES II presenta la información correspondiente a los años 1601-1700 manteniendo los mismos principios metodológicos que fueron empleados en el primer volumen. Para terminar esta nueva bibliografía han sido necesarios años de trabajo en bibliotecas españolas y europeas. De esta manera se ha conseguido reunir la máxima cantidad disponible de datos sobre gramáticas y diccio-narios de la lengua española publicados en el siglo XVII, así como sobre historias de la lengua española y estudios dedicados a los más variados aspecto de su desarrollo. La Bibliografía cronológica de la lingüística, la gramática y la lexicografía del español (BICRES II) ofrece, en orden cronológico, apoximadamente 1.300 títulos.
