Cet ouvrage revisite l'histoire intellectuelle et politique canadienne entre la révolution américaine et les rébellions de 1837-1838 au Haut et au Bas-Canada en la réintégrant dans le cadre des Révolutions atlantiques qui ont secoué l'Europe et l'Amérique entre 1776 et 1838. Reposant sur un cadre théorique inspiré des travaux des historiens intellectuels du monde atlantique, il traite plus particulièrement de l'importance du concept de liberté dans le développement de l'État dans les deux colonies. Il démontre que ces dernières se sont développés dès 1791 en suivant un idéal de liberté qui, tout en étant différent de la liberté à l'oeuvre au sein des mouvements révolutionnaires de la fin du XVIIIe siècle, n'en était pas moins issu des Lumières. Il présente également les rébellions de 1837-1838 comme étant en partie le résultat d'un affrontement entre deux concepts très différents de liberté.

Bien qu'il apparaisse aujourd'hui comme l'une des figures incontournables de la phenomenologie, le philosophe-resistant tcheque Jan Patocka (1907-1977) attendait encore une interpretation integrale de son oeuvre. C'est l'ambition de cet essai, qui en propose une lecture a la fois historique et systematique, s'appuyant egalement sur des textes tcheques inedits en francais, comme Eternite et historicite (1947), dont certains extraits sont ici traduits. Cette premiere tentative explicite la nouvelle possibilite de la phenomenologie, qu'avait d'ailleurs entrevue Heidegger au debut des annees trente - rien d'autre que la liberte, desormais enracinee dans le rapport de la vie humaine au monde - un monde et une vie humaine redefinis comme des mouvements et, plus essentiellement, comme des evenements. Reprenant a nouveaux frais le probleme du monde de la vie, Patocka ouvre la voie a une transformation de la phenomenologie de l'existence en phenomenologie de l'evenement et, plus encore, de l'histoire. Cette transformation lui permet de se situer dans l'histoire de la phenomenologie, comme d'entrer en dialogue avec ses figures les plus contemporaines.

This book proposes, for the first time, an in-depth analysis of the Philosophie sociale, published in Paris in 1793 by Moses Dobruska (1753-1794). Dobruska was a businessman, scholar, and social philosopher, born into a Jewish family in Moravia, who converted to Catholicism, gained wide recognition at the Habsburg court in Vienna, and then emigrated to France to join the French Revolution. Dobruska, who took on the name Junius Frey during his Parisian sojourn, barely survived his book. Accused of conspiring on behalf of foreign powers, he was guillotined on April 5, 1794, at the height of The Terror, on the same day as Georges Jacques Danton. From Dobruska's ideas, which were widely used between the late eighteenth century and the first decades of the nineteenth century without attribution to their author, emerge some of the key concepts of the social sciences as we know them today. An enthusiastic and unfortunate revolutionary and sometimes a brilliant theorist, Moses Dobruska deserves a role of his own in the history of sociology.
