"New worlds for old words / Mundos nuevos para viejas palabras" is a collection of chapters on the theme of lexical borrowing in the languages of Western Europe with particular focus on borrowing from Latin, or from Greek via Latin, into Spanish. Such cultured, or “learnèd” borrowing—as it has sometimes been designated—, is an especially intriguing feature of the Romance languages, since they also derive from Latin. It is also of particular interest to historical linguists since it is an example of what has been called “change from above”: innovation first evidenced in the written usage of the culturally élite which then diffuses into more general acceptance, with the result that some cultured borrowings (e.g. problem/problema, social, program(me)/programa) are now amongst the most common words in the modern languages. Despite their enormous influence on such major languages as English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Italian, the mechanisms by which these borrowings become established in their host languages have to date been relatively little studied. This book seeks to make a contribution to this question and revive interest in what has become a neglected area of historical linguistics and contains contributions both by internationally respected scholars and new researchers in the field. This bilingual collection will appeal to academics, scholars, and postgraduate students of Hispanic Studies, Cultural History, and particularly Historical Linguistics and Romance Linguistics. "New worlds for old words / Mundos nuevos para viejas palabras" es una colección sobre los préstamos léxicos en los idiomas de Europa occidental, centrándose sobre todo en los préstamos del latín, o del griego a través del latín, al español. Los cultismos son un rasgo especialmente interesante de las lenguas romances, ya que ellos mismos proceden del latín. También es de gran interés para la lingüística histórica dado que es un ejemplo de lo que se conoce como “cambio desde arriba”: cambios atestiguados primero en la lengua escrita de la élite cultural que luego comienza a tener un uso más generalizado, y cuyo resultado es que algunos de estos cultismos (por ejemplo “problema”, “social”, “programa”) se encuentran entre las palabras más comunes en los idiomas modernos. A pesar de su enorme influencia en lenguas tan importantes como el inglés, el español, el portugués, el francés o el italiano, los mecanismos por los que estos préstamos se establecen en los idiomas de acogida se han estudiado relativamente poco hasta ahora. Este volumen es una contribución a esta cuestión y su objetivo es reavivar el interés en lo que se ha convertido en un área olvidada de la lingüística diacrónica. Se incluyen capítulos de académicos conocidos internacionalmente y de investigadores noveles. The book draws a brief profile of Italian linguistic history and addresses some current problems linked to globalization, the values of the mother tongue and multilingualism and the need to re-establish Italian and European linguistic policy on new foundations. Contemporary Italian is a particularly stratified cultural asset, in which one can grasp, alongside the many new elements, the evident and precious signs of a very strong link with the past. In the European panorama, Italy today stands out, in fact, for the accentuated multilingualism and the long duration of the national language. On the one hand, the extraordinary animal and plant biodiversity in our country corresponds to an extraordinary cultural and linguistic diversity; on the other hand, we all feel that Dante's language, Petrarch and Boccaccio still belong to us, and coincide in the fundamental features with ours. Such wealth, particularly appreciated abroad (as shown by the growing demand for Italian in the world), deserves to be better known by the younger generations, and also protected and enhanced with appropriate tools, starting with a decisive rethinking of the national language policy.

La lingua è in continua evoluzione e si adatta a realtà e a circostanze sempre nuove come quella dell’attuale pandemia, che ne è la prova più recente. In tutti i momenti di crisi storica e sociale, ciò si verifica infatti in maniera più rapida ed evidente. Fin dall’inizio di una situazione inedita che ha coinvolto il mondo intero quale quella dell’emergenza sanitaria da Covid-19, nella comunicazione di massa si assiste non solo alla creazione di neologismi, ma anche a un nuovo impiego di parole ed espressioni preesistenti, che sono già al centro del dibattito della comunità scientifica linguistica e di quella sociologica. Questa presa di coscienza è stata il punto di partenza per le riflessioni che hanno animato le due giornate del convegno Parole che non c’erano. La lingua e le lingue nel contesto della pandemia, svoltosi in modalità ‘a distanza’, diremo usando un’ulteriore locuzione entrata oramai nel nostro linguaggio quotidiano, il 18 e il 19 marzo 2021, ovvero a circa un anno dallo scoppio della pandemia.

Fare dell’inglese la lingua planetaria della scienza, dell’università o dell’Europa implica alti costi e gravi effetti collaterali. Il globalese rappresenta un enorme giro d’affari per i Paesi anglofoni e si impone a scapito delle identità locali considerate un ostacolo alla comunicazione e ai mercati internazionali. Le altre lingue rischiano di diventare i dialetti di un “anglomondo” che pensa e parla in inglese, e si anglicizzano travolte da uno “tsunami degli anglicismi” che in Italia è particolarmente devastante. Sedotti da tutto ciò che è a stelle e strisce, incuranti che il plurilinguismo e l’ecologia linguistica sono una ricchezza, agevoliamo dall’interno questo processo cannibale. Dietro la nevrosi compulsiva con cui ricorriamo agli anglicismi c’è un cambio di paradigma sociale e una storia che non è ancora stata raccontata, ma che sarebbe ora di affrontare.

L’italiano, i dialetti e le lingue straniere sono tutti aspetti del più globale “fenomeno lingua”, un argomento che ci affascina e sul quale ognuno di noi ha le sue idee. Dagli anglicismi al linguaggio paritario, dal ruolo dell’italiano in Europa a quello delle lingue nazionali e minoritarie nell’era delle reti sociali, i temi di attualità non mancano, soprattutto adesso che in Italia c’è un governo che pensa di avere una politica culturale e della lingua. Tutto ciò in una situazione in cui la conoscenza della linguistica come scienza non è molto diffusa tra la popolazione, una lacuna che vizia il dibattito e contribuisce alla proliferazione di idee a volte un po’ pittoresche. Non restava che rivedere la storia dell’italiano e delle lingue dei nostri vicini europei, cercando di divertirci, di sfatare un po’ di luoghi comuni e di prendere finalmente consapevolezza del fatto che la lingua è anche una questione politica: sta a noi decidere se vogliamo trattarla in modo esclusivistico o pluralistico, nazionalistico o cosmopolita, populista o democratico.
