L'autrice, da oltre trenta anni, insegna lingua inglese nelle scuole medie statali. Scrive questo volume pensandolo sia per gli addetti ai lavori, ai quali descrive come la sua didattica superi l'approccio grammaticaletraduttivo e si ispiri al modello linguistico-comunicativo, sia per chiunque voglia costruire spazi di competenza comunicativa, di abilità nel capire e nel farsi capire. Per questo motivo, ribadisce l'importanza dell'imparare a parlare: chi non sa parlare, non riesce a parlare neanche con sé stesso. Chi produce solo parole elementari, produrrà solo pensieri elementari e la sua esperienza del mondo sarà limitata. Più si allarga e si espande il proprio linguaggio, e più si mettono le parole in azione, più si allarga e si espande l'orizzonte del proprio mondo. In questa cornice, l'autrice ci svela come la sua didattica ambisca a produrre parole, linguaggi, esperienza del mondo. Ci indica, pertanto, le tre aree di interesse a cui fa abituale riferimento, a partire dalla flipped classroom: il materiale di studio si prepara a casa ed i compiti si fanno in aula, tutti insieme, anche per poter superare in tempo reale gli eventuali errori. Vengono poi presi in esame anche l'impiego del CLIL, lo studio di materie insegnate direttamente in lingua inglese ed il reflective learning, un percorso di elaborazione consapevole delle esperienze personali dell'allievo. In un tale cambio di paradigma, che influenza le linee tradizionali di autorità in classe, appare determinante la personalità dell'insegnante, del quale, a fine volume, si analizzano gli stili di comportamento e le modalità relazionali con la classe. Utilizzando i modelli dell'analisi transazionale, si delineano quali parti di sé l'insegnante mette in gioco nel rapporto con l'allievo. Il pensiero complessivo che ispira il volume è la bellezza irrinunciabile di fare della scuola una comunità di apprendimento. Anche se non si ha idea di dove il percorso di crescita possa condurre e cosa possa fare incontrare, l'unica forte certezza è che si creeranno tante rotte, tanti sbarchi, tanti approdi. Approdi provvisori sempre e solo in noi stessi: il punto più importante da cui, volta per volta, poter ripartire.
