Altro che le pensioni romagnole!Lo sfortunato che passa di lì non può aspettarsi delizie da inclusive tours. Deve temere la perdizione del corpo e magari quella dell’anima. In questo volume sono riuniti due casi insigni di locande dove agiscono delle streghe: uno descritto dall’anglo-polacco Conrad, uno da Caragiale, un grande romanziere rumeno. Nel suo racconto don Giovanni si chiama sempre Don Juan ma per Balzac è italiano, per la precisione ferrarese. Alla Corte di Ferrara c'è una Brambilla, come la Prinzessin Brambilla di E.T.A. Hoffmann. E c’è un padre a cui don Giovanni ruba l’elisir di lunga vita.A partire da questo insolito inizio si dipana una storia in cui, a dire il vero si fa poco sesso e molta magia. Per arrivare a una conclusione, fulminante. Sebbene noi, abbagliati inquilini dell'era della televisione, fatichiamo ormai ad accorgercene perché ciò che è notevole è qui l'aspetto cromatico, paradossalmente oscurato in noi dalla troppa facilità con cui lo si riproduce su un monitor. Ma se riusciamo a immaginarsi la scena finale del lungo racconto, che è un’orgia di oro e di rosso come la scena finale del Don Giovanni di Mozart, percepiamo una brillante ironia.
