Comme dans toute l'Amérique des plantations où le nègre fut l'indigène de substitution, le grand marronnage a représenté une réalité importante. A Cuba, les esclaves fugitifs se retranchaient sur les hauteurs boisées à l'Est, dans la Sierra Maestra, ou bien dans la forêt vierge qui s'étend aux côtes d'Ouest en partie envahies par les mangles ou encore dans le plat pays du Centre, parsemé de mornes considérables. Le choc entre la société esclavagiste et la société marronne s'explique d'abord par le fait que Cuba ait cherché à se substituer à l'opulente colonie française de Saint-Domingue ruinée par la révolution nègre d'Haïti en 1802-1804. Au-delà des représentatios de la dissidence majeure que fut le grand marronnage, distincte des rébellions d'esclaves et des conspirations des libres de couleur, cet ouvrage s'attache aux causes et aux conséquences de cette singulière "insurgence", à savoir la conquête d'une liberté dans les bois, une liberté acquise et non octroyée. La guerre des marrons a bien eu lieu à Cuba au cours de la première moitié du XIXe siècle entre 1815 et 1852, sur toute l'étendue de la grande île où sévissait l'économie de plantation.
