Timor oriental sera indépendant le 20 mai 2002. Il s'agira alors du huitième Etat de la Communauté des pays de langue portugaise (la CPLP). Cette indépendance, supervisée par l'ONU, aura coûté un prix terrible à la population. Après la décolonisation, tardive et ratée, de 1975, le pays a souffert d'une recolonisation atypique par l'Indonésie, avec le soutien explicite des Etats-Unis et de l'Australie, et grâce au silence complice de la plupart des pays européens, en particulier la France. Plus d'un tiers de la population a disparu dans les combats, les déplacements forcés et les massacres. La honte nationale ressentie au Portugal autour de cette tragédie obligea Lisbonne à opposer son veto aux divers accords d'association économique de l'Indonésie souhaités par l'Union européenne : Timor redevint par ce biais un enjeu international pour le régime indonésien. La reconnaissance de l'autodétermination par le nouveau régime en place Djakarta ne signifia nullement un contrôle du pouvoir politique sur l'institution militaire, habituée depuis près de vingt-cinq ans à vivre à Timor en pays conquis. Après le référendum d'août 1999 rejetant l'autonomie et se prononçant pour l'indépendance, les exactions des milices pro-intégration jetèrent le pays dans le chaos et impliquèrent enfin une intervention de l'ONU. Deux ans après le référendum historique de 1999, les Timorais, à nouveau appelés aux urnes, donnèrent la majorité absolue au parti issu de la lutte armée, le Fretilin. Le pays s'achemine-t-il donc vers une indépendance paisible ? Rien n'est moins sûr. La misère est profonde, pendant que les étrangers ayant afflué en nombre affichent un niveau de vie infiniment supérieur à celui de la population. Dans un pays détruit et hétérogène, tant sur le plan ethnique que linguistique et religieux, la plus grande attention à la diversité devra guider les nouveaux dirigeants.

Portugal's European Union honeymoon has officially ended. It was the victim of a Europe-wide political and financial crisis and an unstable EU identity increasingly splintered along regional and economic fractures. What does this mean for the former good student of European democracy? The answer may lie in renewed Portuguese efforts to deepen and strengthen ties with Lusophone countries across the globe, which since 1996 have been organized into a supranational organization called the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP). While Portugal's marginality in relation to Europe might be emphasized in the corridors of Brussels, within the realm of the CPLP the former world power can once again see itself as existing at the center geographically as well as from a historic-cultural perspective of an extensive international milieu. The Lusophone World: The Evolution of Portuguese National Narratives explores the dialectic between Portugal's sense of identity and belonging in the EU and the CPLP. It provides an analysis of the manner in which Portugal's institutional allegiances to both of these organizations have impacted the political, economic, and social fabric of the nation. The fact that Portugal is turning to its former colonies as alternate partners in trade, commerce, emigration, and development initiatives may not be evidence of straightforward estrangement from the European continent. More likely, Portugal appears to be riding a fresh wave of what it means to be modern in the European milieu. This new concept of modernity, related to rhetoric of hybridity and a self-professed position as interlocutor, could be evidence of a deeper understanding of the new tools needed to survive and prosper in a rapidly-changing European Union.

The volume Gardens of Madeira – Gardens of the World. Contemporary Approaches displays present tendencies in calling upon the idea of gardens, being a wide-range approach to their literary, sociological and cultural representations. The book`s four parts: “Madeira: A Garden in the Sea?”, “Gardens as Temporal and Spatial Category. Cultural and Literary Approaches”, “Gardens as an Expression. Socio-cultural Perspectives” and “Re-Creating the Archetypal Garden – Discourses and Practices” refer to vast geographical and cultural areas, starting with the very complex sample of the overseas-yet-European Island of Madeira, and then joining the exemplification material from historical and contemporary European communities (with some luso-centric accents), including examples from the less known Slavonic and Eastern European countries. Those European issues are confronted with various non-European societies such as from Africa, Asia, and both Americas. Gardens evoke and express in many ways the present human condition, and - as such a process goes on - this book provides proposals for patterns to connect them to the modern and post-modern rules of self defining, reading the Other, interpreting world/national/cultural literatures, as well as to the various attempts to introduce the idea of gardens into the basic spatial and temporal aspects of contemporary communities. It also demonstrates the theoretical and practical attempts to project our “gardens` dependence” on to one of the essentials for contemporary societies which are multicultural, urbanised, technologically equipped and dependent, but which still are keen on reading and constructing paradises as environmental and cultural spaces for both asylum and encounter. Volume 2 of A Comparative History of Literatures in the Iberian Peninsula brings to an end this collective work that aims at surveying the network of interliterary relations in the Iberian Peninsula. No attempt at such a comparative history of literatures in the Iberian Peninsula has been made until now. In this volume, the focus is placed on images (Section 1), genres (Section 2), forms of mediation (Section 3), and cultural studies and literary repertoires (Section 4).
