Jews In An Illusion Of Paradise written by Norman Simms and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-01-23 with Religion categories.

These further six chapters of Jews in an Illusion of Paradise now focus on individual exemplary figures and clusters of poets, dramatists, critics, journalists, art historians—Jews whose achievements were once celebrated, but now are almost all but forgotten, not because of changes in aesthetic taste or style but because of social, political and other ideological issues. The book continues to examine the clash between their conscious and unconscious self-presentation as Jews in a culture that wilfully or inadvertently misunderstood or rejected this aspect of “otherness” the men and women represented from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries. Whereas the first volume concentrated on the themes, images and rhetorical motifs of this awkward status of Jewish intellectuals and artists, here the ambiguous personalities and repressed anxieties of the exemplary figures are stressed. For millennia, Jews were considered outside of normal history, passive victims of persecution; then suddenly, with Emancipation, they fell into history and out of their mythical place in the scheme of things. Everything seemed to crumble into dust and ashes.

Transnational French Studies written by Charles Forsdick and has been published by Liverpool University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-10-01 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

The contributors to Transnational French Studies situate this disciplinary subfield of Modern Languages in actively transnational frameworks. The key objective of the volume is to define the core set of skills and methodologies that constitute the study of French culture as a transnational, transcultural and translingual phenomenon. Written by leading scholars within the field, chapters demonstrate the type of inquiry that can be pursued into the transnational realities – both material and non-material – that are integral to what is referred to as French culture. The book considers the transnational dimensions of being human in the world by focussing on four key practices which constitute the object of study for students of French: language and multilingualism; the construction of transcultural places and the corresponding sense of space; the experience of time; and transnational subjectivities. The underlying premise of the volume is that the transnational is present (and has long been present) throughout what we define as French history and culture. Chapters address instances and phenomena associated with the transnational, from prehistory to the present, opening up the geopolitical map of French studies beyond France and including sites where communities identified as French have formed.

Caviar written by Nichola Fletcher and has been published by Global Eye Investments Group Inc this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-04-08 with Cooking categories.

It would be easy to write caviar off as an out-of-date and unsustainable indulgence, but the story is far more interesting and complex than that. Fourteen years on from her original publication, Nichola Fletcher, MBE, has brought the expanding world of caviar right up to date in this gem of a book. Her engaging writing has won her many awards including, for the first edition of this book, being co-winner of the coveted André Simon Award. The story of caviar is one of greed, indulgence, enterprise, and despair, but ultimately one of hope, with sustainable caviar now readily available. How did the humble fish eggs of Caspian fishermen become such an international symbol of luxury and decadence? Looking back to its heyday in Tsarist Russia, America, and Europe in the Roaring Twenties, Nichola seeks out the colorful characters who played their part. She investigates the declining wild sturgeon population – a story that is a microcosm of overfishing all over the world. But the work of conservationists now gives optimism, and the worldwide spread of sustainable caviar production means that it is now possible to enjoy caviar with a clear environmental conscience. Finally, there is sound guidance on choosing from the many different kinds of caviar as well as advice on how best to serve and cook with this ultimate indulgence.

As Always Julia written by Joan Reardon and has been published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-12-01 with Cooking categories.

With her outsize personality, Julia Child is known around the world by her first name alone. But despite that familiarity, how much do we really know of the inner Julia? Now more than 200 letters exchanged between Julia and Avis DeVoto, her friend and unofficial literary agent memorably introduced in the hit movie Julie & Julia, open the window on Julia’s deepest thoughts and feelings. This riveting correspondence, in print for the first time, chronicles the blossoming of a unique and lifelong friendship between the two women and the turbulent process of Julia’s creation of Mastering the Art of French Cooking, one of the most influential cookbooks ever written. Frank, bawdy, funny, exuberant, and occasionally agonized, these letters show Julia, first as a new bride in Paris, then becoming increasingly worldly and adventuresome as she follows her diplomat husband in his postings to Nice, Germany, and Norway. With commentary by the noted food historian Joan Reardon, and covering topics as diverse as the lack of good wine in the United States, McCarthyism, and sexual mores, these astonishing letters show America on the verge of political, social, and gastronomic transformation.

Fishes With Funny French Names written by Debra Kelly and has been published by Liverpool University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-12-02 with History categories.

This book tells the story of what happens when an essentially Parisian institution travels and establishes itself in its neighbour’s capital city, bringing with it French food culture and culinary practices. The arrival and evolution of the French restaurant in the British capital is a tale of culinary and cultural exchange and of continuity and change in the development of London’s dining-out culture. Although the main character of this story is the French restaurant, this cultural history also necessarily engages with the people who produce, purvey, purchase and consume that food culture, in many different ways and in many different settings, in London over a period of some one hundred and fifty years. British references to France and to the French are littered with associations with food, whether it is desired, rejected, admired, loathed, envied, disdained, from the status of haute cuisine and the restaurants and chefs associated with it to contemporary concerns about food poverty and food waste, to dietary habits and the politicisation of food, and at every level in between. However, thinking about the place of the French restaurant in London restaurant and food culture over a long time span, in many and varied places and spaces in the capital, creates a more nuanced picture than that which may at first seem obvious.
