This Companion to Latin American Film is a new, up-to-date introduction to the best twenty-five films of the region. It is designed for the general reader who wants to know the basic facts, figures and ideas about the movies in Latin America. The introductory essay traces the history of Latin American cinema from its humble beginnings in the mid- 1890s until the smash hits of recent years: Like Water for Chocolate (1993), Central Station (1998), Love's a Bitch (2000), And your Mother Too (2001), City of God (2002). The early period when Latin American cinema was dominated by foreign film makers or foreign models (such as Hollywood), as well as the 1960s when as a genre it finally found its feet (the New Latin-American Cinema movement) - are also covered in depth. Each film chapter contains all the information you need -- cast and crew, awards, plot -- as well as a detailed analysis of the themes and techniques which make the film tick. There is a Guide to Further Reading which offers the reader advice on what to read next (all the important books, articles and Internet sites), as well as a Select Bibliography and an extensive index for ease of reference.

Small Cinemas In Global Markets written by David Desser and has been published by Lexington Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-12-18 with Social Science categories.

Small Cinemas in Global Markets addresses aspects such as identity, revisiting the past, internationalized genres, new forms of experimental cinema, markets and production, as well as technological developments of alternative small screens that open new perspectives into small cinema possibilities. Small and big markets for small industries reveal an unimagined diversification of the cultural product and consequently the need to analyze the impact at local, regional, and global levels. Much needed to continue and expand the existing scholarship in the field, this volume is based on research by authors who approach their subject from Western theoretical perspectives with a professional (mostly native) knowledge of the language, cultural realities, and film industry practices. It covers aspects from fifteen different countries, including Bolivia, Brazil, China (Hong Kong), Croatia, East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda), Greece, Indonesia, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Poland, Romania, Morocco, and the United States. Since both film and documentary distribution from certain areas of the globe on international markets remains problematic, it is important for the academic field to discuss and circulate them as much as possible, and to create the basis for further exploration. Documenting and reflecting on the role, state, and reception of the film industry provides scholarly understanding to the industry’s wide range of seemingly chaotic technological transformations.

In the West, we have been presented with a so-called ‘memory boom’ over the last couple of years. An interdisciplinary field has emerged that explores representations of the past through different commu-nication channels, genres and media. This book contains a number of essays on the traumatic and conflict-ridden history of Spain and Italy and how this has been represented in the artefacts of memory coming from different genres and media (literary fiction, films and television, memoirs, commercials, historiographic material, etc.) The essays all deal with the processes connected to memories, negotiations and possible reconciliations, which are tied to the conflicted and disrupted histories of both countries. Despite their obvious differences, the two countries are remarkably similar: Both show significant linguistic and cultural fragmentations; both have been under dictatorships and authoritarian regimes for long periods of time; and from the early seventies onwards both have experienced waves of political violence that have accumulated in actual terrorist operations. Therefore the collective memory of Spain and Italy provides a good example of how a violent past is generated, communicated and transformed over time. The contributions in this book illustrate how artistic and literary discourses are important in understanding memory processes and the construction of a national identity through situations of enforced amnesia or insufficient processing of past conflicts. Leonardo Cecchini is Associate Professor, Department of Aesthetics and Communication – Italian, Aarhus University. Hans Lauge Hansen is Associate Professor, Department of Aesthetics and Communication – Spanish, Aarhus University.

South American Cinematic Culture written by Miriam Ross and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-09-13 with Performing Arts categories.

This study of South American cinema offers a new way of approaching the variety of films available in the region. It brings to light the interconnectivity between state-run institutions (film councils, cinemateques, archives), altruistic bodies (film festival funds, NGOs) and commercial organisations (production companies, exhibitors and distributors). Examples of filmmakers, policy initiatives, funding sources and alternative film networks combine to produce a rich overview of one of the most significant sites for non-Western filmmaking in the twenty-first century. There is an awareness of the place South American cinema has on the international stage and, for this reason, the study involves an in depth look at the way film products are circulated within national boundaries and through external global circuits. Drawing on scholarship from studies on Latin American culture, cultural policy, indigeneity, digital technology, globalisation, transculturation and the public sphere, new links are traced between the various fields.
