Sin haber cumplido treinta años, Karl Marx escribió Miseria de la filosofía en francés, como una respuesta airada a un libro de Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, quien hasta poco tiempo atrás había sido un compañero de lucha. Con su característico humor mordaz, Marx no se priva de ridiculizar al autor de Sistema de las contradicciones económicas o Filosofía de la miseria, afirmando que "tiene la desgracia de ser singularmente incomprendido en Europa. En Francia se le reconoce el derecho de ser un mal economista, porque tiene fama de ser un buen filósofo alemán. En Alemania se le reconoce el derecho de ser un mal filósofo porque tiene fama de ser un economista francés de los más fuertes". Si la obra del anarquista galo, publicada en 1846, buscaba explicar las paradojas subyacentes a las sociedades de su época, la de Marx parte de un juego de palabras (la inversión del título) para desplegar una aguda crítica a ese colega con quien pasaría a tener diferencias irreconciliables. Pero el libro está muy lejos de agotarse en la polémica circunstancial: se trata de una pieza de fundamental importancia en la evolución del pensamiento marxista, pues constituye una exposición concreta y global de la concepción materialista de la historia, hasta entonces presentada de manera desarticulada. Según el propio Marx, es el primer estudio económico que podría considerarse parte de su obra científica de madurez. Esta edición revisada y corregida incluye también los prefacios de Friedrich Engels y parte de la correspondencia entre Proudhon y Marx —punto inicial de la ruptura entre ambos pensadores—, además de una bibliografía sustancialmente ampliada. Al cuidado del filósofo mexicano Gustavo Leyva, quien escribió una presentación que reconstruye el contexto de esta obra y ofrece pistas de lectura, Miseria de la filosofía confirma su condición de clásico ineludible de la economía política y la filosofía.

This has historically been translated as "The Poverty of Philosophy", but in this translation it is rendered "The Misery of Philosophy" since it is Marx's reply to Pierre-Joseph Proudhon's 1847 "The System of Economic Contradictions, or The Philosophy of Misery" This is volume VI in The Complete Works of Karl Marx by Newcomb Livraria Press. This edition includes a new introduction by the translator and reference materials including a Glossary of Philosophic and Economic Marxist Terminology, an Index of Personalities Associated with Marx and a Timeline of Marx’s Life and Works. Originally published in French under the title "Misère de la philosophie. Réponse a la philosophie de la misère de M. Proudhon" in 1847 in Paris, the German version was published in 1884 in Stuttgart.

In France he has the right to be a bad economist, because he passes for a good German philosopher. In Germany he has the right to be a bad philosopher, because he passes for one of the greatest of the French economists. We, as both German and economist at the same time, wish to protest against this double error. The reader will understand that in this ungrateful task it has been often necessary for us to leave the criticism of M.
