The volume gathers together seventeen articles dedicated to the monetary history of medieval Italy, most of them newly translated into English. The articles in the first section of the volume trace the development of monetisation in Italy from the Lombard period until the rise of the communes, taking Rome, Lazio, Tuscany, and several cities and regions in north-central Italy as case studies. The articles in the second section analyse different aspects of monetary production and circulation in Byzantine Italy, while the third gathers together studies on various aspects of Carolingian coinage: the transition from the Lombard system and the problem of furnishing an adequate supply of silver; mints and royal administration; and the activity and inactivity of mints operating at the edges of the Regnum Italiae. All of the articles share the author’s characteristic concern with setting the evidence from written sources against the wealth of new data emerging from recent archaeological research.

This book explores the relationship between the city of Rome and the Aurelian Wall during the six centuries following its construction in the 270s AD, a period when the city changed and contracted almost beyond recognition, as it evolved from imperial capital into the spiritual center of Western Christendom. The Wall became the single most prominent feature in the urban landscape, a dominating presence which came bodily to incarnate the political, legal, administrative, and religious boundaries of urbs Roma, even as it reshaped both the physical contours of the city as a whole and the mental geographies of 'Rome' that prevailed at home and throughout the known world. La monetazione di Lucca è tra le più studiate sia in ambito regionale che, in parte, in quello italiano. L’antichità e la continuità operativa della zecca cittadina, attiva dall’epoca longobarda sino alle soglie dell’Età Contemporanea, hanno attratto l’attenzione degli studiosi di storia monetaria e numismatica sin dal Seicento. Sebbene siano state numerose le ricerche e le pubblicazioni sulle monete lucchesi di età medievale, diverse sono le questioni rimaste aperte e svariati gli aspetti da approfondire. I nuovi rinvenimenti, cresciuti negli ultimi cinquant’anni di sviluppo dell’Archeologia Medievale in Italia e in ambito mediterraneo, associati a rinnovati studi tipologici sui materiali e alle possibilità offerte dalle analisi archeometriche, hanno offerto alcune risposte ad antichi quesiti, e ne hanno al contempo posti altri. In questo volume sono presentati i risultati dell’elaborazione dei dati emersi con l’indagine stratigrafica effettuata in quella parte della città di Siena che, dal X secolo d.C., iniziò ad essere occupata dall’Ospedale di Santa Maria della Scala, relativamente alle fasi comprese fra il tardo antico e i secoli centrali del medioevo. Lo scavo ha dato la possibilità di ricostruire i profondi processi di trasformazione che hanno radicalmente mutato il tessuto insediativo di questa parte della città per quel lungo periodo che le fonti scritte lasciavano sostanzialmente in ombra, portando un contributo sostanziale alla ricostruzione del paesaggio urbano senese. Le stratigrafie oggetto di questo lavoro, cioè quelle che conservavano depositi databili tra il VI e il XII secolo d.C.1, in buona misura cronologicamente precedenti il primo impianto dell’Ospedale, sono pertinenti a 12 ambienti collocati su tre livelli corrispondenti a tre ampi gradoni tagliati nel versante meridionale della collina sulla cui sommità sorge il duomo di Siena. Il testo è suddiviso in tre parti: nella prima si ripercorrono sinteticamente le vicende dell’intero organismo urbano senese, di cui l’area dell’ospedale è parte integrante, a partire dall’età romana per giungere fino all’XI secolo d.C.; segue poi l’illustrazione del quadro offerto dallo studio della stratificazione archeologica, dei materiali ceramici, metallici, vitrei e delle monete; infine si mette a confronto il “modello” urbano di Siena con quello rurale del vicino villaggio di Montarrenti, al fine di individuare analogie e differenze nelle dinamiche insediative della Toscana meridionale in epoca altomedievale.
