Dans les sociétés sauvages et archaïques, la monnaie existe sous forme de biens précieux dénombrables, mais elle ne permet pas d'acheter - et notammeant pas des biens puisque ceux-ci ne sont pas vendus mais donnés. Elle permet seulement de s'acquitter d'une dette de vie qui, pourtant, ne peut jamais être abolie. Ces monnaires archaïques, explique Philippe Rospabé, sont données comme substitut de vie, à titre de gage par lequel les donneurs de biens s'engagent à rendre une vie pour celle qu'ils ont prise à un autre groupe. Pour les société archaïques, la monnaire, c'est la vie : par le versement du "prix de la fiancée", elle salue le don d'une femme porteuse de vie donnée en mariage ; par le "prix du sang", elle compense la mort qu'on a infligée. On mesure les implications multiples de cette analyse rigoureuse de certaines des institutions clés des sociétés sauvages, appuyée notamment sur une lecture exhaustive du matériau ethnographique récent consacré à la Nouvelle-Guinée. Ce livre passionnera autant les économistes que les ethnologues, les sociologues que les philosophes.
