Inspiré par le pionnier de la mystagogie patristique, le père Jean Daniélou, et par le spécialiste des religions et liturgies orientales, le père Irénée Henri Dalmais, l'abbé Jean-Pierre présente dans ce volume, une double conception de la mystagogie : pédagogique et herméneutique. Comme pédagogie "active", la mystagogie fait d'abord vivre les rites liturgiques pour les expliquer ensuite aux néophytes. Par cette technique, elle s'avère une méthode efficace pour éduquer à la vie de foi en Jésus-Christ en temps de crise comme le nôtre. Comme herméneutique, elle dévoile le sens des rites, gestes, symboles et textes liturgiques pour permettre aux fidèles chrétiens de vivre de la liturgie et de se laisser transformer par elle ; elle ne poursuit pas une connaissance purement intellectuelle et rationnelle, mais bien une connaissance pratique et existentielle. L'application de cette méthode à l'étude du sacrement de la confirmation le prouve à suffisance. La recherche de l'Abbé Jean-Pierre dépasse la conception réductionniste de la mystagogie, entendue comme catéchèse sur les mystères ; elle étend la mystagogie à toute la liturgie chrétienne. Elle dépasse également le cadre restreint de la liturgie romaine et ouvre la voie à un œcuménisme liturgique, lequel doit prendre en compte le donné liturgique occidental et oriental.
