El fenómeno del "modernismo" incluye mil correlatos. Constituyó por cierto, en la historia de la Iglesia una crisis largamente preparada, y cuando salió a luz se desplegó en innúmeras variaciones. Para colmo, y esto le confiere especial actualidad al presente estudio, dicha corriente, a pesar de las condenaciones que recibió de parte del Magisterio, seguiría su carrera dentro de la Iglesia. No en vano San Pío X la denunciaría en su momento, como una peste que se encontraba incubada "en las venas mismas de la Iglesia". Podríase decir, hablando en general, que las tempestades anteriores provinieron del exterior de la Iglesia; ésta, en cambio, se gestó en sus propias entrañas, al modo de un cáncer espiritual. Y desde allí continuaría actuando. Según lo acabamos de señalar, un fenómeno tan vasto como el que nos aprestamos a considerar no podía dejar de tener prolegómenos más o menos determinantes. Algo nos detendremos en ellos antes de abocarnos propiamente a la descripción de una crisis tan abarcativa como fue el modernismo.

Pero hoy esto ha dejado de ser así. La cultura se ha vuelto estructural. Se confunde con lo económico, penetra por completo lo político: la cultura atraviesa el corazón mismo del poder. Agustín Laje, escritor, politólogo, intelectual y conferencista, presenta en este trabajo seis capítulos sobre la historia política de la cultura. A lo largo del libro, dialoga con los más reconocidos sociólogos, filósofos, politólogos, antropólogos e historiadores, posicionándose a la altura de los grandes intelectuales. El interés de Laje estriba en desvelar de qué manera la cultura, en el mundo moderno y, sobre todo, en nuestra fase posmoderna, se convierte en materia política. Esto mismo es lo que se denomina “batalla cultural”: una confrontación de carácter político cuyo fin es la influencia sobre los elementos de una cultura a través de los dispositivos y las instituciones culturales. Pero a Laje no lo mueve únicamente un interés de carácter académico. Desde la primera página, el autor hace explícita su intencionalidad política: brindar herramientas teóricas para lo que denomina “Nueva Derecha”. Frente a la Nueva Izquierda, el progresismo y el globalismo, Laje propone esforzarse por construir nuevas derechas organizadas a través del concepto de “batalla cultural”.
