La presente investigación ha tenido como objeto estudiar y analizar la nueva nobleza titulada que se creó a lo largo del reinado de Felipe V. Para ello, nos hemos centrado en examinar cómo funcionaron los procesos burocráticos de solicitud, tramitación y obtención de títulos nobiliarios; cuáles fueron las formas de acceso que existieron para alcanzar tan preciados honores; y quiénes conformaron el grupo privilegiado de nuevos nobles titulados durante el reinado del primer monarca de la Casa de Borbón. La primera parte del trabajo, centrada en el conocimiento detallado del procedimiento burocrático que siguieron estos honores desde que fueron solicitados hasta que fueron concedidos, ha permitido profundizar en las distintas vías de acceso a la nobleza titulada que existieron durante el periodo estudiado, en los méritos y servicios que fueron recompensados, en los factores que confluyeron en la obtención de un título, y en el perfil socio-profesional de quienes lograron titular. Los resultados conseguidos desvelan, principalmente, que los títulos nobiliarios creados por Felipe V fueron otorgados siguiendo una política muy similar a la que había empleado el último monarca de la Casa de Austria, Carlos II; que el origen social de un individuo no fue determinante en absoluto a la hora de titular, de modo que lograron alcanzar estos honores personas de diverso origen social; que no existió un control sistemático sobre las "calidades y circunstancias" de los nuevos titulados; y que el perfil social y profesional de quienes recibían un título, estuvo estrechamente vinculado a la vía administrativa por la que se tramitó la merced solicitada. Asimismo, se ha comprobado que las formas de acceso a la nobleza titulada fueron muy variadas, y que los servicios recompensados fueron igualmente heterogéneos, pues se premiaron tanto servicios realizados en la Corte, la alta Administración, la Justicia o el Ejército, entre otros, como "servicios pecuniarios" que implicaban una clara compra de estos honores. En consecuencia, las puertas del estrato más elevado del estamento nobiliario se abrieron, pues, para aquellos que contaban con notables méritos y servicios -pecuniarios o no-, con medios económicos suficientes para mantener los derechos del título y el lustre y boato exigido a un conde o marqués, y para quienes se encontraban bien relacionados y formaban parte de alguna red de poder que pudiera favorecer la obtención de un título. En cuanto a los beneficiarios de estas mercedes, hemos de señalar que fueron, principalmente, los burócratas y empleados de la alta Administración, las elites económicas y financieras, y los miembros de los patriciados locales, quienes conformaron una nueva nobleza titulada, de servicio, fiel a Felipe V, que estuvo dispuesta a servir al monarca en sucesivas ocasiones con el objeto de recibir nuevas recompensas que mejoraran aún más sus posiciones económicas y sociales. De forma simultánea, el aumento del número de nobles titulados produciría la renovación sanguínea del grupo, circunstancia que lejos de hacer peligrar al estamento, lo reforzaría aún más, dando solidez y estabilidad a un orden social que, caracterizado por una extraordinaria movilidad, mantenía inmutables los fundamentos de sus estructuras más profundas.

This volume has a double purpose. First of all, it follows an Italian tradition of thought that began in the 15th and 16th centuries as Civic Humanism and continued up until the golden period of Italian Enlightenment as represented by the Schools of Milan and Naples. Its main contribution to the history of economic thought is its conception of the market as a place centered on the principle of reciprocity and civil virtues. This book explains why the civil approach to economics disappeared from cultural debates, scientific enquiries and the public arena at the end of the 18th century, only to surface again in more recent times. Secondly, the book draws attention to a new reading of the whole of economic reality. Indeed, the civil economy in one sense is mainly a cultural perspective from which it is possible to interpret the entire economic discourse. If a theory is considered as substantially a point of view on reality, then this cultural perspective can also set the basis for a diverse economic theory. Where does the key element of such diversity lie? It lies in the attempt to integrate within the economic system the three basic principles of any social order: the principle of exchange of equivalents, the principle of redistribution and the principle of reciprocity. Though this book draws on the history of economic ideas, it focuses on the present day from an ancient perspective in order to find convincing answers to the new questions arising in the era of globalization.
