Il libro, che si compone di saggi teorici e di una selezione delle ricerche svolte in un arco di tempo che va dal 1974 al 2014, propone un nuovo genere di dispositivo progettuale: le carte orientate al progetto di architettura. La proposta, che mira ad inserirsi nel dibattito sul ruolo degli elementi geografici nel disegno degli insediamenti, si appoggia sulla natura costruttiva della carta e sulla capacità della cartografia di mettere in scena la forma architettonica della Terra. This book describes the results of a collective research project – led by Giancarlo Motta and Antonia Pizzigoni first at Polytechnic of Milan and then at Polytechnic of Turin – that concerns the relation between architectural design and cartography. The book contains theoretical essays and a collection of the main research developed from 1974 to 2014 that together propose a new kind of architectural design apparatus: maps oriented towards projects. This proposal aims at participating the debate concerning the role of geographic elements in settlement design and is based on the constructive aspects of the map and its capability to represent the architectonic features of landform.

Che libro è questo? Non è precisamente un libro di testo, non è un manuale, non è alla fine neanche un libro di teoria. Probabilmente è molto di più. Questo è un libro che, adoperando strumentalmente uno sguardo pedagogico (i Laboratori di Teoria del Progetto nei quali insegniamo al Politecnico di Torino, ma anche molte altre esperienze didattiche al di fuori della nostra scuola) e collocandosi dentro un contesto di indagine scientifica (il dottorato di ricerca), cerca di mettere insieme la pratica dell’insegnamento e la teoria del progetto, magari a partire dall’esperienza del fare, vero e proprio baricentro di tutto il volume. Teoria, metodo ed esercizio entrano insieme, con una buona dose di ovvietà e di evidenza, nella riflessione sull’insegnamento, quella che qui chiamiamo, con un poco di compiacimento, la pedagogia della progettazione architettonica. Ne costituiscono i tre cardini essenziali. In fondo, per trasmettere una disciplina (che, come l’architettura, ha in sé sostanza di sapere e anche sostanza di pratica), dobbiamo costruirne o ri-costruirne una teoria, definirne un metodo, addestrare e addestrarci al suo esercizio.

Collana T+A Territori di Architettura diretta da Luigi Ramazzotti Il territorio a ovest di Palermo, compreso da Isola delle Femmine a Partinico, si caratterizza per una edilizia sparsa, nuclei più densi e radi terreni coltivati. La seconda natura si sta trasformando in campagna urbanizzata, con l'eccezione dell'area intorno a Partinico dove sono presenti campi agricoli più ampi. Questo destino ineluttabile può trovare un'alternativa nell'ipotesi de “La città in estensione” di Giuseppe Samonà (1976) che diviene riferimento privilegiato per gli sviluppi teorici e progettuali del Prin 2009. Tali esiti danno corpo alla presente pubblicazione dell'Unità di ricerca della Facoltà di Architettura di Palermo, in cui si propone di progettare la città e il paesaggio come un insieme unitario. Sprawl, dense small towns and the countryside characterize the territory west of Palermo, between Isola delle Femmine and Partinico. The anthropized nature is turning into sprawl, with the exception of the area around Partinico mainly consisting of wide agricultural fields. This inescapable fate can find an alternative in the “Extending town” hypothesized by Giuseppe Samona (1976) that becomes the prime reference for the theoretical and projectual developments of the Prin 2009. These results compose the publication of the Research Unit of the Faculty of Architecture of Palermo, in which is proposed to design the town and the landscape as a unified whole.
