This book gathers the acts of the Congress on Peace and Humanitarian Actions, including the text of official statements and reports. The major themes discussed deal with the contribution of intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations and the International Red Cross to peace, in particular in such fields as armed conflicts, disarmament, famine relief, human rights, migration, refugee phenomena, etc. Three of the statements are specially dedicated to the refugee problem. The first is from Mr G. Arnaout, Director of the Division of Refugee Law and Doctrine in UNHCR, who gives an overview of the humanitarian actions of the Office since its creation through its two essential functions: protection and search of solutions. The second is given by Mrs H. Taviani, France Terre d'Asile, describing the activities of this NGO in favour of refugees, mainly by helping them to be received and accommodated all over France. The third by Mrs A. Gradin, Swedish Minister of Immigration, presents the point of view of the state facing the flow of migrants and refugees and their impact on the economic, social and cultural structures of a given country.

Che adulti diventano i bambini cresciuti in tempo di catastrofe e ricostruzione? Quali effetti hanno sia il periodo di sofferenza, sia le strategie di salvataggio e sostegno sociale che le società locali mettono in opera per loro?Seguendo le vite di bambine e adolescenti cresciute in Aceh (Indonesia) dopo il terribile tsunami del 2004, alla fine di una lunga guerra civile (1975-2005), questo libro esamina il costituirsi intimo della marginalità sociale attraverso le ideologie e le pratiche di ricostruzione designate a scongiurarla. La povertà economica, la discriminazione di genere, il commercio del corpo sessuale e lo sfruttamento lavorativo di alcune giovani acehnesi appaiono infatti non solo inevitabili, ma proprio strutturali al contesto di distruzione e di riprogettazione sociale nel quale crescono le ragazze. Non si tratta tuttavia di un’etnografia della disperazione. Il libro, forte di una ricerca decennale, presenta persone capaci di reinterpretare strutture tradizionali e capovolgimenti contemporanei con creatività. Come fanno?, ci si chiede. La riflessione sullo sviluppo di una personalità vitale conduce alla definizione di un “sé mobile”, capace di svicolare fra le matrici simboliche trasformative di catastrofe e ricostruzione senza perdersi e senza rinunciare a compiere buone scelte.
