Comprendre le paysage économique du Languedoc oriental, à travers l'héritage des deux derniers siècles, c'est remonter le temps jusqu'à l'époque où résonnaient les sonnailles de la transhumance, et où les lourds convois de mulets arpentaient les contreforts du Massif central. C'est revivre une époque, où dominaient le blé et la manufacture. Arrive ensuite la viticulture, qui enrichit les villes et peuple les campagnes, "siècle d'or" écourté par des crises de surproduction répétées. Tandis que se forme, dans la plaine, un espace soumis à la civilisation du vin, le moyen et le haut-pays, de plus en plus sollicités pour fournir de la main-d'œuvre, connaissent les effets exacerbés de l'exode rural. Apparaissent alors les premiers contours d'un Languedoc oriental, caractérisé par la vigueur - de plus en plus forte,- de ses contrastes économiques entre le haut et le bas-pays. Des enclaves de prospérité, généralement localisées dans le piémont, se maintiennent - voire se développent - mais elles ne sont pas suffisamment fortes pour contrarier la déstructuration économique des espaces excentrés. L'effondrement laisse pour héritage un arrière-pays immense et protégé, mais le moins peuplé d'Europe : c'est le point de départ pour une reconquête... Dans sa préface, le professeur Jules Maurin, président de l'Université Paul Valéry, souligne l'originalité des recherches, la force de la synthèse, et l'abondance de la documentation. Mais, surtout, la variété de la cartographie, et la richesse de l'iconographie, mieux encore, le souffle même de l'ouvrage, invitent le lecteur à recueillir et à vivre un héritage en forme d'épopée.

This is the first book of Sternfeld's largely unseen early colour photographs. In 1969 Sternfeld began working with a 35 mm camera and Kodachrome film, and First Pictures contains works from this time until 1980. Here Sternfeld develops traits that appear in his mature work: irony, a politicised view of America, concern for the social condition. But there are also pictures that bear little relation to his later work: colour arrangements that parallel those of Eggleston, as well as street photography which Sternfeld ceased making in 1976. The photographs in First Pictures were made at a time when colour photography was struggling to assert itself against the authoritative black and white tradition, making this book a revelation both in Sternfeld's oeuvre and in the history of contemporary photography.
