«La pietra lunare» si apre su una «scena della vita di provincia» grottesca e quasi allucinata, di quelle in cui l’autore delle «Due zittelle» era maestro. «Dal fondo dell’oscurità» il protagonista si sente guardato da «due occhi neri, dilatati e selvaggi» che lo gettano nello stupore e nel terrore. E al tempo stesso egli non può fare a meno di cogliere «un volto pallido, dei capelli bruni, un seno abbagliante scoperto a mezzo». Così ci appare Gurù, la fanciulla-capra, che presto condurrà Giovancarlo e il lettore fra i «lunari orrori» di creature diafane, fantomatiche, e fin nelle viscere della terra, nel regno arcano delle Madri, svelandosi come mistagoga di una iniziazione erotica. Il mondo sembra subito spartirsi in due specie di realtà, ostili e dissonanti. Una è quella della vita gretta che si raccoglie intorno al desco familiare, impregnata di un «odore pesante d’avanzi di lavatura di piatti e d’insetti domestici». L’altra è quella che con la luna si annuncia nel cielo, là dove «succedono cose strane, e meravigliose», dove «ci sono cose che corrono navigano girano per conto loro mentre noi dormiamo». E si può dire che tali due realtà corrispondano ai registri fondamentali dell’opera di Landolfi quale si prefigurava con nettezza in questo suo primo romanzo, anno 1939.
