Italian Painting in the Age of Unification reconstructs the artistic motivations and messaging of three artists—Tommaso Minardi, Francesco Hayez, and Gioacchino Toma—from three distinct regions in Italy prior to, during, and directly following political unification in 1861. Each artist, working in Rome, Milan, and Naples, respectively, adopted the visual narratives particular to his region, using style to communicate aspects of his political, religious, or social context. By focusing on these three figures, this study will introduce readers outside of Italy to their diversity of practice, and provide a means for understanding their place within the larger field of international nineteenth-century art, albeit a place largely distinct from the better-known French tradition. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, nationalism, Italian history, or Italian studies.

Italy S Southern Question written by Jane Schneider and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-05-31 with Social Science categories.

The ‘Southern Question' has been a major topic in Italian political, economic and cultural life for a century and more. During the Cold War, it was the justification for heavy government intervention. In contemporary Italy, a major part of the appeal of the Lombard League has been its promise to dissociate the South from the North, even to the point of secession. The South also remains a resonant theme in Italian literature. This interdisciplinary book endeavours to answer the following: - When did people begin to think of the South as a problem? - Who - intellectuals, statisticians, criminologists, political exiles, novelists (among them some important southerners) - contributed to the discourse about the South and why? - Did their view of the South correspond to any sort of reality? - What was glossed over or ignored in the generalized vision of the South as problematic? - What consequences has the ‘Question' had in controlling the imaginations and actions of intellectuals and those with political and other forms of power? - What alternative formulations might people create and live by if they were able to escape from the control of the ‘Question' and to imagine the political, economic and cultural differences within Italy in some other way? This timely book reveals how Southern Italians have been affected by distorted versions of a complex reality similar to the discourse of ‘Orientalism'. In situating the devaluation of Southern Italian culture in relation to the recent emergence of ‘anti-mafia' ideology in the South and the threat posed to national unity by the Lombard League, it also illuminates the world's stiff inter-regional competition for investment capital.

… It is with great enthusiasm that Kermes supported this initiative hosting the studies, as though these were part of a conference, ‘ideal’ in that it never took place physically, but very much real in terms of the international plurality of its contributions, presented here thanks to lively exchange of information across frontiers … This publication is the fruit of a perfect and exemplary collaboration between curators, conservators and scientists brought together from all countries… The publication here before us provides a number of answers – let us be brave and use the word ‘definitive’ – to questions which have long been an issue of debate … (Pierre Rosenberg de l’Académie française, Président-directeur honoraire du Musée du Louvre) This volume of the journal Kermes devoted to the meticulous technical analysis of several works by Nicolas Poussin, reveals the wealth of knowledge acquired through the implementation of new methods of physico-chemical analysis taken together with the detailed investigation of the handling and materials deployed during the process of creating the work of art. A number of different means have been employed in order to investigate in the greatest detail the nature of a particular pigment, its impurities, the effects of the addition of a medium as well as the effects created by mixtures … (Philippe Walter, Directeur du Laboratoire d’archéologie moléculaire et structurale, CNRS-UMR 8820, Université Pierre et Marie Curie) indice/Index: speciale – NICOLAS POUSSIN. The Influence Of Pre Raphaelitism On Fin De Si Cle Italy written by Giuliana Pieri and has been published by MHRA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with History categories.

This volume is the first comprehensive study of the influence of English Pre-Raphaelitism on Italian art and culture in the late nineteenth century. Analysis of the cultural relations between Italy and Britain has focused traditionally on the special place that Italy had in the British imagination, but the cultural and artistic exchanges between the two countries have been much misunderstood. This book aims to correct this imbalance by placing Pre-Rapahelitism in its European context. It explores the nature of its influence on Italy, how it was transmitted, and how it was manifested, by focusing on the role of Italian Anglophiles, the English communities in Florence and Rome, the writings of Gabriele D'Annunzio, and a number of Italian artists active in Tuscany and Rome. The works of Cellini, Ricci, Gioja, De Carolis, and Sartorio in particular fully demonstrate the impact of Pre-Raphaelitism on the young Italian school of painting which found in the English movement an ideal link with its glorious past on which it could build a new artistic identity. These artists show that English Pre-Raphaelitism was one of the most powerful single influences on fin-de-siecle Italian culture.
