Noto principalmente come artista religioso in relazione alla decorazione delle chiese otto-novecentesche romane, il profilo del pittore genzanese Eugenio Cisterna emerge nella sua complessità come figura poliedrica di decoratore, restauratore, imitatore di stili e tecniche antiche, fotografo, studioso di iconografia cristiana ed esperto di pittura medievale. In contatto con le élites sociali e culturali della capitale e del resto del paese, esegue molti lavori in ville e palazzi per committenti privati, rivelando uno spirito puramente eclettico. Nelle decorazioni religiose giunge tuttavia, pur esprimendosi costantemente attraverso una pluralità di registri stilistici, ad un aggiornamento dei modelli medievali sulla scorta dell'esperienza romana di Edward Burne-Jones e all'acquisizione di un linguaggio realista, non distante da quello della coeva pittura di storia. MARIELLA NUZZO, storica dell'arte della Soprintendenza per i Beni Storici Artistici ed Etnoantropologici del Lazio, laureata e specializzata in storia dell'arte medievale, nel corso del dottorato di ricerca si è occupata dell'architettura e della decorazione delle chiese costruite nella capitale dopo il 1870. Si interessa dei temi del revival e dell'eclettismo tra Otto e Novecento.

L'immagine femminile nella pittura orientalista ha spesso rappresentato quanto di più seducente e sensuale e quindi riprovevole, nell'ipocrita società borghese dell'Ottocento. Tutto ebbe inizio dalla comparsa della traduzione francese delle "Mille e una notte", raccolta di novelle di provenienza araba. Queste storie, piene d'intrighi, sessualità e violenza avevano come protagonisti califfi, odalische ed eunuchi. Era un mondo immaginario con luoghi proibiti, profumi d'incensi, giovani donne ricoperte da mussole trasparenti che fumavano il narghilè, pigramente adagiate su tappeti multicolori. Inoltre, le cronache scritte da chi ritornava dai viaggi in oriente, spesso narravano di eventi che facevano volare la fantasia. Tutto questo creò immagini di sogno che condizionarono anche la pittura.

This volume is the first comprehensive study of the influence of English Pre-Raphaelitism on Italian art and culture in the late nineteenth century. Analysis of the cultural relations between Italy and Britain has focused traditionally on the special place that Italy had in the British imagination, but the cultural and artistic exchanges between the two countries have been much misunderstood. This book aims to correct this imbalance by placing Pre-Rapahelitism in its European context. It explores the nature of its influence on Italy, how it was transmitted, and how it was manifested, by focusing on the role of Italian Anglophiles, the English communities in Florence and Rome, the writings of Gabriele D'Annunzio, and a number of Italian artists active in Tuscany and Rome. The works of Cellini, Ricci, Gioja, De Carolis, and Sartorio in particular fully demonstrate the impact of Pre-Raphaelitism on the young Italian school of painting which found in the English movement an ideal link with its glorious past on which it could build a new artistic identity. These artists show that English Pre-Raphaelitism was one of the most powerful single influences on fin-de-siecle Italian culture.

Saverio Altamura (1826-1897) fu uno dei primi pittori che portarono al Caffè Michelangiolo di Firenze la nuova tendenza pittorica, avendo visitato, nel 1855, il padiglione realista di Gustave Courbet, realizzato a Parigi in occasione della Esposizione Universale. In quell'occasione erano con lui Domenico Morelli e Serafino De Tivoli (1826-1892), così, proprio a partire dal 1855, Firenze divenne il centro in cui andò maturando il nuovo stile, Macchiaiolo, con il concorso di artisti toscani e di altra provenienza che si concentravano sulla resa dei rapporti cromatici e tonali di due frammenti di realtà, prescindendo dal disegno e dal chiaroscuro perché in natura i contorni non esistono.
