W. B. Yeats (1865-1939) est apprécié comme un des plus grands poètes de l'époque. Moins connue, surtout en France, est sa seconde contribution majeure à la littérature de ce siècle: ses nombreuses pièces de théâtre. Yeats a été l'initiateur du mouvement du théâtre irlandais et de l'Abbey Theatre. En tant qu'auteur dramatique il choisit le drame poètique à une époque où, dans les pays de langue anglaise du moins, la forme ne répond pas à la demande des contemporains. Wagner, Villers de l'Isle-Adam, Maeterlinck l'aident à forger ses idéaux; puis il est enthousiasmé par les recherches de Craig et, plus tard, par les nô. Les techniques des Symbolistes, les sujets mythiques irlandais, et des thèmes apparentés à ceux du nô s'allient pour produire un drame poétique qui ne ressemble à aucun autre écrit en anglais. Les rapports entre le temporel et le spirituel sont au coeur de ses pièces. Il refuse les structures traditionnelles où l'intrigue joue un rôle de premier plan et préfère la pièce en un acte dont la brièveté met en valeur l'intensité dramatique. Il expérimente les procédés de la tagédie grecque et ceux du nô. Dans son désir d'embrasser toute l'expérience humaine, il s'intéresse à la tragédie et à la farce ; il trouve à cette juxtaposition des précédents historiques dans le théâtre grec ancien et la tradition japonaise classique. Parce qu'il ne doit pas détourner du texte l'attention du spectateur, l'acteur ne peut se permettre un geste superflu. Un même sobriété s'impose dans la mise enscène. Le mot recouvre sa souveraineté. Pièces d'avant-garde à leur époque, elles frappent maintenant par leur actualité.
