This is the first book on Italian colonialism that specifically deals with the question of citizenship/subjecthood. Such a topic is crucial for understanding both Italian imperial rule and the complex dynamics of the different colonial societies where several actors, like notables, political leaders, minorities, etc., were involved. The chapters gathered in the book constitute an unprecedented account of a heterogeneous geographical area. The cases of Eritrea, Libya, Dodecanese, Ethiopia, and Albania confirm that citizenship and subjecthood in the colonial context were ductile political tools, which were structured according to the orientations of the Metropole and the challenges that came from the colonial societies, often swinging between submission, cooptation to the colonial power, and resistance. On one hand, the book offers an account of the different policies of citizenship implemented in the Italian colonies, in particular the construction of gradated forms of citizenship, the repression and expulsion of dissidents, the systems of endearment of local people and cooptation of the elites, and the racialization of legal status. On the other, it deals with the various answers coming from the local populations in terms of resistance, negotiation, and construction of social identity.

For much of the twentieth century the Mediterranean was a colonized sea. Italy's Sea: Empire and Nation in the Mediterranean (1895-1945) reintegrates Italy, one of the least studied imperial states, into the history of European colonialism. It takes a critical approach to the concept of the Mediterranean in the period of Italian expansion and examines how within and through the Mediterranean Italians navigated issues of race, nation and migration troubling them at home as well as transnational questions about sovereignty, identity, and national belonging created by the decline and collapse of the Ottoman empire in North Africa, the Balkans, and the eastern Mediterranean, or Levant. While most studies of Italian colonialism center on the encounter in Africa, Italy's Sea describes another set of colonial identities that accrued in and around the Aegean region of the Mediterranean, ones linked not to resettlement projects or to the rhetoric of reclaiming Roman empire, but to cosmopolitan imaginaries of Magna Graecia, the medieval Christian crusades, the Venetian and Genoese maritime empires, and finally, of religious diversity and transnational Levantine Jewish communities that could help render cultural and political connections between the Italian nation at home and the overseas empire in the Mediterranean. Using postcolonial critique to interpret local archival and oral sources as well as Italian colonial literature, film, architecture, and urban planning, the book brings to life a history of mediterraneita or Mediterraneanness in Italian culture, one with both liberal and fascist associations, and enriches our understanding of how contemporary Italy-as well as Greece-may imagine their relationships to Europe and the Mediterranean today. --

Alle ore 6 di mattina del 4 maggio 1912 un contingente di cinquanta finanzieri, agli ordini del tenente Domenico Tomaselli, sbarcò insieme ai militari delle altre armi e corpi presso Calitea, nell’isola ottomana di Rodi. Era l’inizio della presenza italiana nelle Sporadi meridionali. Da semplice occupazione bellica, con gli anni, essa divenne un vero e proprio Possedimento, con norme fiscali e doganali sue proprie. In oltre trenta anni di governo italiano in Egeo, la Guardia di Finanza si contraddistinse sempre come segno tangibile d’ordine e di tutela del sistema socio-economico e dell’interesse collettivo. Nonostante il numero esiguo e i molti compiti sussidiari affidati al Corpo nello scacchiere – in pace e in guerra – ufficiali, sottufficiali e guardie dimostrarono un esemplare spirito di servizio oltre che di sacrificio, soprattutto nei duri mesi seguenti l’armistizio del l’8 settembre, fino al definitivo rimpatrio, avvenuto il 23 ottobre 1945. Una storia militare finora mai raccontata, ma densa di episodi di caldo eroismo, oltre che di comune e silenzioso quotidiano senso del dovere. GIOVANNI CECINI è nato a Roma nel 1979. Dopo aver prestato servizio quale ufficiale di complemento presso il 157° reggimento di fanteria “Liguria”, si è laureato nel 2003 in Storia Militare presso la facoltà di Scienze Politiche dell’Università degli Studi di Roma “La Sapienza” e, nel 2007, in Storia Contemporanea presso la facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia. Ha partecipato alla realizzazione di “Bandiere, Stendardi, Labari e Gagliardetti dei Corpi Militari dello Stato 1860-2006” di Ales e Dell’Uomo (USSME 2008) ed è autore dei volumi “I soldati ebrei di Mussolini” (Mursia 2008), “Il Corpo di Spedizione Italiano in Anatolia 1919- 1922” (USSME 2010), “Arrigo Procaccia di religione israelita. Un finanziere nella tempesta delle leggi razziali” (Chillemi 2011), “Arnhem 1944” (Chillemi 2013) e “Militari italiani in Turchia 1919-1923” (USSMD 2014). This anthology brings together eight chapters which examine the life of Jews in Southeast Europe through political, social and cultural lenses. Even though the Holocaust put an end to many communities in the region, this book chronicles how some Holocaust survivors nevertheless tried to restore their previous lives. Focusing on the once flourishing and colorful Jewish communities throughout the Balkans – many of which were organized according to the Ottoman millet system – this book provides a diverse range of insights into Jewish life and Jewish-Gentile relations in what became Greece, Yugoslavia, Romania and Bulgaria after World War II. Further, the contributors conceptualize the issues in focus from a historical perspective. In these diachronic case studies, virtually the whole 20th century is covered, with a special focus paid to the shifting identities, the changing communities and the memory of the Holocaust, thereby providing a very useful parallel to today’s post-war and divided societies. Drawing on relevant contemporary approaches in historical research, this book complements the field with topics that, until now in Jewish studies and beyond, remained on the edge of the general research focus.
