All’interno della cultura ebraica, la Porta del Cielo occupa una posizione unica. Scritta in spagnolo nei primi decenni del Seicento, essa è infatti il solo esempio di opera, fra quelle che ancora appartengono al periodo di formazione del canone classico cabbalistico, composta in una lingua «profana»: non nella lingua santa ebraica, né nell’arcaizzante aramaico dello Zohar, né nello yiddish al quale anche sarebbe ricorsa la letteratura chassidica. Questa caratteristica rispecchia l’intento di Abraham Cohen de Herrera (il mercante di origine spagnola, vissuto in Italia e morto ad Amsterdam, le cui vicende personali e familiari vengono ricostruite nell’introduzione anche grazie a documenti d’archivio rimasti finora inediti): scrivere un’opera di introduzione alle dottrine cabbalistiche che fosse accessibile al maggior numero possibile di lettori eliminando l’ostacolo linguistico che ne aveva fino ad allora ristretto la conoscenza diretta a ebrei ed ebraisti. Altri elementi concorrono poi a giustificare quel ruolo di vera e propria mediazione fra cultura ebraica e contesto europeo che si propone la Porta: non solo la lingua ma anche il linguaggio, lineare e razionalizzante, nella quale è composta; il discorso sistematico con cui procede, richiamandosi al modello della Scolastica latina; e il costante riferimento e paragone con il pensiero filosofico, da Platone e Aristotele ai neoplatonici alla cultura italiana rinascimentale. Proprio questa impostazione filosofica del discorso di Herrera è l’aspetto che più sarebbe risultato congeniale a Spinoza, la cui famiglia aveva con Herrera contatti diretti; e se un influsso cabbalistico è riconoscibile nelle concezioni riguardanti Dio e la natura espresse nell’Etica, come già si era cominciato a sostenere alla morte di Spinoza, esso sta senz’altro in relazione con lo stile e il contenuto della Porta. Paradossalmente, però, quest’opera fondamentale rimase manoscritta alla morte dell’autore e fu conosciuta solo attraverso una traduzione ebraica e soprattutto per il compendio in latino contenuto nella Kabbala denudata di Christian Knorr von Rosenroth (1677). Recognized as a master of Italian cinema, Vittorio De Sica is perhaps best known and most respected for his critically acclaimed neorealist films of the period 1946-55. As this anthology reveals, however, his production was remarkably multifaceted. The essays included here - some newly commissioned, some reprinted, and others in translation - look at De Sica's varied career from many perspecives. Structured chronologically, the volume begins by introducing readers to De Sica's early popularity as an actor and singer during the years of Italian Fascism, and to his initial directorial efforts before the end of World War II. It was not until the postwar era, however, that De Sica made his mark in film history. Special attention is given to this critical phase of his career, which encompasses the neorealist films that made him famous: "Shoeshine", "Bicycle Thieves", "Miracle in Milan", and "Umberto D." When the neorealist movement waned after 1955, De Sica returned to his roots in Neapolitan comedy for a series of commercially successful films starring Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni. Memorable works from this period include "Two Women" and "Marriage Italian Style" as well as "Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow", which won De Sica an Academy Award in 1965.
