While the simultaneously creative and destructive forces of modernity in Western Europe have been well studied, the case of Spain has often been overlooked. Visualizing Spanish Modernity concentrates on the time period 1868-1939, which marks not only the beginning of the formation of a modern economy and the consolidation of the liberal state, but also the growth of urban centers and spaces made possible by electricity, transportation, mass production and the emergence of an entertainment industry. The authors examine how mass print culture, early cinema, popular drama, photography, fashion, painting, museums and urban planning played a role in the way that Spanish society saw itself and was in turn seen by the rest of the world. Assessing how new cultural forms were instrumental in shaping Spaniards into citizens of the modern world, the authors consider such subjects as the spectacle of the body, notions of race and gender, the changing meanings of time, space and motion, the relationship between technology and everyday life and popular culture.

El incremento de las publicaciones acompañadas de ilustración gráfica durante el siglo XIX se debió a la mejora en la alfabetización de los lectores, al papel propagandístico del que precisaban los movimientos políticos que se sucedieron en el mundo occidental desde finales del XVIII, a los avances técnicos y a los intereses mercantiles de las empresas comerciales consagradas a la industria editorial. Estos últimos precisamente explican el modo de actuación de los propietarios de las editoriales, quienes se volcaron en el empleo de ilustraciones en sus publicaciones. La ampliación de la producción y el consumo de textos impresos darían ocasión a lo largo del XIX a una multiplicación de posibilidades para el diálogo entre pintura y literatura. En la lengua conversacional de esa época, distintas palabras –monos, santos, láminas– nombrarían las imágenes, desatendiendo su proyección en los textos lingüísticos. Hoy, para denominar la relación pintura y literatura, se emplean términos técnicos como iconotextoen que se incardinan ambas vertientes artísticas, si bien Benito Pérez Galdós ya había acuñado el marbete texto gráfico léxico. Sistematizar tal relación explicando cómo se produjo en el curso del xix en sus diferentes géneros literarios es el objetivo de esta obra.

How was the female body perceived in the popular culture of late nineteenth-century Spain? Using a wide array of images from popular magazines of the day, Lou Charnon-Deutsch finds that women were typically presented in ways that were reassuring to the emerging bourgeois culture. Charnon-Deutsch organizes the 190 images reproduced in this book into six broad categories, or &"fictions of the feminine&": she reads women's bodies as a romantic symbol of beauty or evil, as a privileged link with the natural order, as a font of male inspiration, as a mouthpiece of bourgeois mores, as a focalized point of male fear and desire, and as an eroticized expression of Spanish exoticism and political ambitions. These imaginary visions of femininity, Charnon-Deutsch argues, were a response to, and also helped to create, gendered stereotypes by suggesting ideal feminine behavior and poses. Further, they comprised a reassuring &"between-male&" cultural medium that provided graphic validation of women's docile body for a culture enthralled with femininity. Integrating the fields of literature and cultural studies, Charnon-Deutsch's approach to this subject is unique. Many of the images collected here are available for the first time, and they represent only a fraction of the two thousand images Charnon-Deutsch collected during her research. This book will appeal to students of Spanish cultural studies and gender studies, as well as to art historians.
