Il volume tratta degli eventi che vanno dalla capitolazione di Loreto del 19 settembre all’arrivo del Re di Sardegna, Vittorio Emanuele II, in Ancona, il 3 ottobre 1860. Eventi che sono stati, dalla storiografia, quasi sempre presentati come susseguenti e consequenziali, e quindi non significativi, a quelli del 18 settembre 1860, durante i quali il gen. Cialdini impedì, e disperse, nella vallata del Musone le forze pontificie del De La Moriciére, provenienti dall’Umbria, che cercavano di rinchiudersi in Ancona e dare vita ad un assedio ad oltranza, in attesa dell’intervento delle potenze Cattoliche, soprattutto dell’Austria. Il pericolo di un intervento austriaco era stato sempre tenuto presente dal Comando Sardo. Prendere Ancona significava scongiuralo. Il piano di invasione delle Marche e dell’Umbria del generale Fanti teneva ben presente questo pericolo: le due masse per la campagna di invasione dello Stato Pontificio prevedeva che la più consistente fosse quella del generale Cialdini, che avrebbe operato lungo la litoranea adriatica; questa massa era, nel contempo, più vicino alla Valle Padana ed all’Emilia, pronta a retrocedere, in caso di attacco austriaco, e formare il fianco sud dello schieramento già in atto, 150.000 uomini, schierati lungo il confine veneto-lombardo. L’altra massa, la meno consistente, doveva operare nell’Umbria, e, conquistatela, avrebbe marciato, via Colfiorito, su Ancona e sarebbe stata la sola a gestire le operazioni nello Stato Pontificio, divenuto, in presenza dell’iniziativa austriaca, un fronte secondario. L’azione delle due masse avrebbe avuto il concorso della flotta, e, conquistata Ancona, la piazzaforte sarebbe stata la base di operazione sul mare contro l’Austria. Se l’Austria non si fosse mossa, l’obiettivo rimaneva sempre conquistare Ancona, ma le due masse, riunite, avrebbero dovuto marciare verso sud per portare nell’alveo moderato l’iniziativa garibaldina, impedendo la costituzione di una repubblica mazziniana a Napoli e nel meridione d’Italia. Ancona ha, in queste piano, un ruolo centrale e rimase sempre l’obiettivo primario di tutta l’azione Sarda. In una operazione che oggi diremo “joint”, l’investimento e la presa di Ancona rappresenta un esempio brillante di capacità militare e intuizione politica, fuse insieme, che rappresenta una pagina esaltante della nostra tradizione militare Ancona, divenuta Sarda, da piazzaforte periferica di uno Stato al tramonto, diventa una piazzaforte di primaria importanza di uno Stato chiamato a partecipare alla formazione dei nuovi equilibri tra le Potenze, non solo mediterranei, ma anche europei. Ed Ancona stessa inizia, da quel 29 settembre 1860, uno sviluppo sociale, economico ed urbanistico di prima grandezza, che la percorrerà per tutto l’800 e la prima metà del secolo breve. Il volume descrive quei eccezionali giorni del settembre 1860 durante i quali si realizzano i momenti più belli ed esaltanti della storia recente della città Dorica.
