Con questo libro l’Accademia della Crusca partecipa alla Settimana della lingua italiana nel mondo 2015 promossa dal Ministero degli Affari Esteri. Difficile immaginare un percorso dell’italiano all’estero più ricco e battuto di quello segnato dalla musica, dai madrigali al melodramma alla canzone. L’italiano ha contribuito in maniera formidabile alla costituzione del lessico specifico della musica classica e non è rimasto estraneo neppure a quello della musica pop; si è identificato a lungo con l’opera lirica, i cui capolavori, intonati spesso da grandi compositori stranieri, vengono ancor oggi eseguiti in tutti i teatri lirici del mondo; ha per decenni diffuso attraverso la canzone, anche dialettale, un’immagine amica e pacifica dell’Italia. Le sue tracce si riconoscono ancora nella musica leggera di innumerevoli Paesi. Oggi, infine, la nostra lingua si dispone a dar voce musicale anche ai nuovi italiani, mettendosi a disposizione di nativi di altri idiomi e altre musiche. Al volume hanno collaborato accademici e linguisti, specialisti dell’italiano in musica (Ilaria Bonomi, Edoardo Buroni, Gabriella Cartago, Vittorio Coletti, Lorenzo Coveri, Paolo D’Achille, Pier Vincenzo Mengaldo, Stefano Saino, Stefano Telve), cui si è felicemente unito Franco Fabbri, musicologo tra i massimi esperti della musica pop e leggera del XX secolo. In Italia e nel mondo l’Accademia della Crusca è uno dei principali e più antichi punti di riferimento per le ricerche sulla lingua italiana e la sua promozione nel mondo. Sostiene l’attività scientifica e la formazione di ricercatori nel campo della lessicografia e della linguistica; diffonde la conoscenza storica della lingua e la coscienza critica della sua evoluzione; collabora con le istituzioni governative ed estere per il plurilinguismo.
