Resumen La razón de ser de este trabajo es efectuar la transcripción y análisis del grabado que publicó José Lamot en 1757. Desde que lo conocí me di cuenta de que era un documento de gran valor histórico, en el que se acredita la gran tradición industrial de la cuenca del río Deva. La lámina toca aspectos que difícilmente narran los historiadores, como son las fases de producción, en este caso, armera. Son muy pocas las imágenes que se han publicado sobre este tema a lo largo de los siglos, y éstas están relacionadas más con la fundición de cañones que con las fábricas de arcabuces, mosquetes y fusiles. Al tratarse de un grabado de la mitad del siglo XVIII le proporciona un valor añadido. Llama la atención la persistencia de la organización gremial, heredada de la Edad Media, que analizaremos. Además de efectuar la transcripción y comentarla, hemos considerado conveniente incluir la historia de la Real Fábrica de Placencia de las Armas, aunque de manera esquemática, lo cual permite completar la información que proporciona el grabado. Igualmente, hemos considerado conveniente añadir una serie de anexos que permiten completar esa historia. Abstract The purpose of this work is to transcribe and analyze the engraving published by José Lamot in 1757. As soon as I saw it, I realized that it was a document of great historical value, in which the great industrial tradition of the Deba river basin is accredited. The plate touches on aspects that are difficult for historians to narrate, such as the phases of production, in this case, the arms industry. Very few images have been published on this subject over the centuries, and these are more related to the foundry of cannons than to the factories of arquebuses, muskets and rifles. The fact that this is an engraving from the middle of the 18th century gives it added value. The persistence of the guild organization, inherited from the Middle Ages, which we will analyze, is striking. In addition to making the transcription and commenting on it, we have considered it convenient to include the history of the Royal Factory of Placencia de las Armas, albeit in a schematic way, which allows us to complete the information provided by the engraving. We have also considered it convenient to add a series of annexes to complete this history. La razón de ser de este libro es el estudio de la cartografía histórica de la Isla en todos sus aspectos. Normalmente, el historiador se apoya en la cartografía para fortalecer sus conclusiones o simplemente para ilustrar alguno de los hechos que narra. Sin embargo, el cartólogo o, si se quiere, el cartófilo, elabora toda la información a partir del mapa o plano y la historia pasa a ser una ciencia auxiliar. La isla de El Hierro es la más occidental de las islas Canarias. Con una superficie de 268,71 km2, es también la más pequeña del archipiélago canario. Los modernos volcanólogos consideran que la isla es el producto de una fractura tectovolcánica triple que forma una estrella triangular con ángulos cercanos a los 120º. Este trabajo trata también sobre la necesidad, conocida desde la Antigüedad, de situar en los mapas el meridiano origen para fijar la longitud de cualquier lugar. En el mapa de Hecateo el confín del mundo está en el Océano, más allá de las Columnas de Hércules (Estrecho de Gibraltar). Ptolomeo estableció que el primer meridiano pasaba al Occidente de las Macárôn Nesôi (Islas Afortunadas).
