El fenómeno de China encarna, en apariencia, una profunda contradicción en la dualidad que se establece entre el socialismo, en donde basa su relación de autoridad y régimen político, y el capitalismo que rige su sistema económico. A partir de allí, este ensayo postula que el gigante asiático, por la secuencia de acontecimientos derivados de los cambios económicos que ha experimentado desde 1978, no necesariamente está obligado a iniciar un proceso de transición hacia un sistema democrático. El análisis se realiza en el marco de una perspectiva sistémica, articulado en el enfoque de adaptación que el libro propone, el cual da cuenta de la interacción dinámica entre el sistema político chino y los sistemas económico y social. Para explicar este proceso se analizan un conjunto de variables fundamentales en el proceso de adaptación del sistema político chino: los antecedentes históricos del régimen autoritario, las características jurídico-constitucionales del funcionamiento y organización de las instituciones del Estado y del PCCH, la importancia del liderazgo político como articulador de ambas instituciones, el fortalecimiento de la unidad nacional como consecuencia de las reformas económicas y la organización e influencia de algunos actores sociales en el sistema.
