¿Qué hacen los habitantes de ciudades sudamericanas cuando practican religión? Esa es la pregunta que intenta responder este libro. Para ello, un equipo de 11 investigadores en Boston (Estados Unidos), Córdoba (Argentina), Lima (Perú) y Montevideo (Uruguay), trabajó durante 3 años en la recolección y el análisis de entrevistas realizadas a más de 250 latinoamericanos en 3 ciudades diferentes. El libro se presenta como una contribución desde la sociología pública, para que una audiencia amplia se encuentre tanto con las historias de vida de algunas personas entrevistadas como con capítulos en los que los investigadores dan cuenta de un análisis científico del tema abordado. Desde la perspectiva de la "religión vivida" por los sujetos, y mediante la recolección de las historias que estos cuentan sobre sus experiencias religiosas, el texto analiza la presencia de lo religioso en la vida cotidiana de sudamericanos "de a pie". En sus experiencias, lo religioso no está circunscripto a los lugares y ritos tradicionales, ni se presenta solo en los márgenes, sino que se mezcla y entreteje con muy diversos aspectos y búsquedas por encontrar una vinculación más directa y significativa con Dios, dioses o la trascendencia. Así, los capítulos exploran los cruces entre religión y política, migraciones, género, nuevas tecnologías, cuerpos, emociones, instituciones religiosas, conversiones, pluralización, ideas de Dios y los no afiliados, e incluye un último capítulo que analiza cómo viven los brasileños sus experiencias religiosas.

Sobre la religiosidad de los sectores populares pesan varios malentendidos. Mirada desde afuera, bajo el supuesto de que vivimos en sociedades que ya no creen en ningún tipo de intervención del "más allá" en la vida cotidiana, esa religiosidad aparece asociada a ideas de superstición o ingenuidad en sus manifestaciones de estampas y rezos de tradición familiar, garajes donde se cantan canciones evangélicas, ofrendas en los altares del Gauchito Gil. Sostenido en la riqueza del acercamiento etnográfico, este libro desmiente esas imágenes cristalizadas y revela un mundo que cada vez más es importante comprender por fuera de las etiquetas. Pablo Semán se aproxima a la religiosidad popular realmente existente para mostrar cuán determinantes son sus lazos con las trayectorias familiares, las coyunturas políticas y económicas, los medios masivos y la cultura. Después de convivir con pentecostales y católicos de un barrio del Conurbano bonaerense, de acompañarlos en sus separaciones, duelos, casamientos, problemas de adicción o de desempleo, devela el núcleo más vital de su religiosidad: su visión cosmológica del mundo, su certeza de que lo sagrado no es un plano separado de la vida sino parte de ella y de que los milagros ocurrieron y pueden ocurrir en cualquier momento. Pero esta sensibilidad, común a evangélicos o pentecostales y a católicos, no es siempre igual a sí misma y va hibridándose con otras experiencias. Recuperando las historias de fieles, catequistas, curanderos, pastores y sacerdotes, jalonadas por conversiones de una religión a otra en el intento de darles sentido a sus vidas, Semán analiza cómo ese modo de experimentar la religión va mutando según las generaciones –quienes fueron jóvenes en los años sesenta o setenta confiaban más en las instituciones que los jóvenes de los noventa, por ejemplo–, según la pertenencia política y las inquietudes militantes, según los consumos culturales (como las bandas de rock o los libros de autoayuda). Así, al seguir trayectos personales muy diversos –de la casa a la calle, de la iglesia a las terapias de autosuperación, del rock a la unidad básica, del dogma cerrado a la experimentación ritual–, Vivir la fe es un aporte imprescindible para reconocer los aspectos innovadores de la religiosidad popular, esa zona de exploración, apropiaciones y revisión crítica que habla de una visión del mundo en que lo sagrado se reinventa todo el tiempo.

What does the practice of religion look like in Latin American today? In this book, which examines religious practice in three Latin American cities-- Lima, Perú; Córdoba, Argentina; and Montevideo, Uruguay-- Gustavo Morello reveals the influence of modernity on average citizens' cultural practices. Technological development, the dynamics of capitalism, the specialization of spheres of knowledge-- all these aspects of modernity were thought to diminish the importance of religion. Yet, Morello argues, if we look at religion as ordinary Latin Americans practice it, we discover that modernity has not diminished religion, but transformed it, creating what Morello calls "enchanted modernity." In Latin America, there is more religion than secularists expect, but of a different kind than religious leaders would wish. Morello explores how urban, contemporary Latin Americans, both believers and non-believers, from different social classes and religious affiliations, experience transcendence in everyday life. Using semi-structured interviews with 254 individuals in three cities with shifting religious landscapes and different cultural histories, Morello highlights the diversity within Latin America, exploring societies that are understudied and examining a broad array of religious traditions: "nones" (agnostics, non-affiliated, atheist), Catholics, Evangelicals (including mainstream Protestants, Pentecostals, neo-Evangelicals), and other traditions (including Jews, Muslims, Mormons, African-derived traditions, and Buddhists). Morello emphasizes elements, nuances, and dynamics that have previously been overlooked and that can enrich the study of religion other non-western societies. The book seeks to contribute to a critical theory of contemporary religion-- one that is not centered in the North Atlantic world and that takes seriously the voices of the Latin American people.

The world is confronted with multiple intersecting crises including exploitation, inequality, political polarization and climate change. World-repairing work is vitally needed. But just at a time when humans most obviously require robust moral imaginaries on which to draw, it is no longer clear what kinds of beliefs, meanings, stories and encounters inspire them to act. We know that nonreligious identities are on the rise in numerous countries throughout the world. But with so much focus on the “non” part of nonreligion, what we don’t know is what nonreligious imaginaries actually look, sound and feel like. What do nonreligious people believe in? What stories inspire them? In what moments do they find meaning? This book seeks to answer these questions through a series of short essays exploring the nonreligious imaginaries that emerge in a range of world-repairing practices, including ethical consumption, community organizing, eating habits, and environmental activism. In so doing, the book provides a crucial contribution to two areas of increasing social and political concern: First, the need to understand not only what nonreligious people are rejecting but also their sources of meaning and action. Second, the urgent need for cultural tools for mobilizing people towards more compassionate and sustainable practices.

Religious commitments can be a powerful engine for progressive social change, and in this new book, Raúl E. Zegarra examines the process of articulation of religious beliefs and political concerns that takes place in religious organizing and activism. Focusing on the example of Latin American liberation theology and the work of Peruvian theologian Gustavo Gutiérrez, Zegarra shows how liberation theology advocates have been able to produce a new balance between faith and politics that advances an agenda of progressive social change without reducing politics to faith or faith to politics. Drawing from theologian David Tracy's method of critical correlation, the book focuses on key historical, philosophical, and theological shifts that have allowed liberation theologians to produce a new interpretation of the relationship between faith and politics in the Christian tradition, especially when issues of social justice are at stake. The book further approaches liberation theology's contributions to theorizing social justice through an unconventional path: a critical dialogue with the work of philosopher John Rawls. This dialogue, as Zegarra contends, allows us to see more clearly the contributions of liberation theology to the cause of progressive social change. Ultimately the book stands between "public religion" and "public reason," offering something of a blueprint for theological innovation and for how to remain committed to one's faith while respecting and defending the core values of democracy.
