Con el racionalismo que se impuso en Europa a finales del siglo XVII, a esta ciencia o arte se la encerró en un cajón de sastre ;ocultismo, espiritismo, esoterismo, etc.; y se la consideró como algo ajeno a la religión. Sin embargo, tras la aparente locura de los antiguos alquimistas se esconde una enseñanza que merece ser tenida en cuenta por los filósofos e historiadores de las religiones, de las artes y de las ciencias actuales. Sus postulados esclarecen registros y modos del ser humano que han permanecido olvidados o enmarcados en campos disciplinares ajenos a la vida del espíritu. Con este olvido, se ha marginado del pensamiento occidental su universo simbólico más íntimo, expresado básicamente por medio de imágenes.
