Un point aveugle marque cependant la recherche : on sait peu de chose de la substance de cette " religion civile ". L'ouvrage de Mark McNaught reprend la question. A partir d'une analyse des discours prononcés par les candidats aux élections présidentielles depuis trente ans, il démontre que l'éthique politique américaine s'articule, toutes formations politiques confondues, autour d'un héritage calviniste, qu'on peut décomposer en quatre composantes essentielles : l'esprit missionnaire, l'éthique puritaine du travail, la croyance dans le libre marché et la nostalgie du paradis perdu. Cette religion civile ne vise pas simplement à rassembler la nation américaine. A travers l'exemple de lois importantes votées au cours de ces dernières années, l'auteur démontre qu'elle dispose aussi, au-delà de sa fonction symbolique, d'une force " performative " : elle joue un rôle premier, aux Etats-Unis, dans la détermination des règles juridiques.

C'est dans ce contexte de débat qu'apparaît aux Etats-Unis au début du XXe siècle le concept de religion civile. Est-il lié à une pure adaptation libérale du religieux à la modernité ? A un idéalisme universalisant trop optimiste sur la société et la condition humaine ? Cet idéalisme peut expliquer les revanches réactives d'aujourd'hui, telles celles des "évangéliques ".
