The late-eighteenth century witnessed multiple Medeas take to the stages of Europe, in the Americas, and across the Russian empire. Performances took place in Moscow and São Paulo, in London and Lisbon, in Gotha, Stuttgart, and Venice. This lively collection of essays examines the various reasons why Medea, the ancient mother who killed her own children, attracted the attention of authors, audiences, actors, and rulers in Europe and its dominions during the pivotal period 1750 to 1800, and to what effects. As a migrant and iconoclast, Medea crosses a number of eighteenth-century borders: linguistic, cultural, national, temporal, spatial, aesthetic, ethical, and generic. Moreover, the fact that late-eighteenth-century playwrights, poets, composers, and choreographers all turned to one of the most problematic characters of Greco-Roman antiquity offers a unique opportunity to examine the remarkable flexibility of the reception process itself. Medea therefore functions as an intriguing case study, reflecting a wider context of cultural and political change within Europe and its colonies in the late-eighteenth century. By drawing together eighteenth-century specialists working across multiple languages and disciplines with the reception perspective of classical scholars, this volume brings much rare material from a range of archives across continental Europe to critical attention for the first time. This volume offers a thorough introduction to Jewish world literatures in Spanish and Portuguese, which not only addresses the coexistence of cultures, but also the functions of a literary and linguistic space of negotiation in this context. From the Middle Ages to present day, the compendium explores the main Jewish chapters within Spanish- and Portuguese-language world literature, whether from Europe, Latin America, or other parts of the world. Mariano Azuela (Mexico, 1873–1952) was a medical doctor by profession, recipient of Mexico’s Premio Nacional de Literatura (1949), a distinguished member of El Colegio Nacional and, by mid-century, one of Mexico’s leading novelists and literary critics. The author of novels, novellas, plays, biographies, and literary criticism, Azuela served as field doctor under Francisco Villa during the Mexican Revolution and, after Villa’s military defeats in 1915, published Los de abajo (The Underdogs, 1915) while in exile in El Paso, Texas. El presente volumen está dedicado a un corpus de dramas de temática histórica escritos en castellano a ambos lados del Atlántico a lo largo del segundo tercio del siglo XIX. Partimos de la idea de que ‘los romanticismos’, entendidos como un campo de tendencias polifacético, contradictorio, cambiante y transnacional, son, ante todo, un periodo de crisis compartida, de rupturas ideológicas y sociopolíticas, un periodo de recapitulación, remembranza y nuevo comienzo en que se reorganizan los órdenes político y estatal tanto en el viejo mundo europeo como en las naciones emergentes del continente americano, recién alcanzada su independencia de la corona española. Planteamos la cuestión de cómo estas obras tematizan la historia, la discuten y hacen un uso propio de la misma relacionándola con sus respectivos presentes y las estéticas que emplean. Kian-Harald Karimi hatte vor seinem Ableben noch die Kraft gehabt, dieses Buchprojekt zu entwerfen. Das war seine Art, sich mit voller Kraft gegen eine lange Krankheit zu stemmen und buchstäblich ins Leben zurückzukommen, eine Aufgabe, die ihn mit Freude erfüllte, denn er hatte eine unermessliche Liebe zur Literatur, einen unstillbaren Drang nach Wissen, eine unbändige Lust am Schreiben und eine grenzenlose Neugier. En su libro Bernardita Llanos M. examina la ilustración española a través del surgimiento de una ideología nacionalista que sostiene la necesidad del colonialismo. Distintos sectores adaptan la ilustración a sus aspiraciones políticas, sin embargo, comparten el interés común por la recuperación del pasado colonial y sus héroes. A través del análisis del distintos discursos, la conquista y el descubrimiento del América aparecen como temas recurrentes en la mitificación del pasado y el carácter nacional que exiben las distintas visiones políticas. Esta parte de la historia imperial se realiza en los escritos de filósofos, intelectuales y dramaturgos populares, quienes definen la identidad nacional a través de empresas heroicas en ultramar. Así, Colón se convierte en el portavoz y Cortés en el forjador del primer estado colonial moderno, cuyo poder y autoridad reside en la propagación del cristianismo y la civilización.
