Spanish identity in the age of nations offers the first comprehensive account in any language of the formation and development of Spanish national identity from ancient times to the present. Much has been written on French, British and German nationalism, but remarkably little has been published on Spanish nationalism. Paradoxically, even in Spain there is much more on Basque, Catalan and other regional nationalisms than on Spanish identity. As a result, this study fills an enormous gap in the literature on Spanish history. This book traces the emergence and evolution of an initial collective identity within the Iberian Peninsula from the Middle Ages to the end of the ancien regime based on the Catholic religion, loyalty to the Crown and Empire. The adaptation of this identity to the modern era, beginning with the Napoleonic Wars and the liberal revolutions, forms the crux of this study. None the less, the book also embraces the highly contested evolution of the national identity in the twentieth century, including both the Civil War and the Franco Dictatorship. Álvarez-Junco ́s pioneering study was awarded both the National Prize for Literature in Spain and the Fastenrath Prize by the Spanish Royal Academy

Esta obra presenta las actas de las jornadas organizadas para la conmemoración de los 150 años de la Revolución de la Gloriosa en Béjar (1868-2018). La correcta coordinación entre la Universidad de Salamanca y la Oficina del VIII Centenario, el Ayuntamiento de Béjar, el Centro de Estudios Bejaranos y la Asociación Béjar 68 ha permitido tanto la celebración de aquellas ponencias como la publicación de los trabajos que allí se expusieron y hoy ven la luz. Las investigaciones recogen aspectos hasta hoy desconocidos de una revolución, la de la Gloriosa, que resultaba ser un mero eco falto de sentido en la memoria de lo que afectó a la ciudad de Béjar. Durante aquellos días de septiembre de 1868 el nombre de Béjar resonó en el territorio nacional como ejemplo de la defensa civil de los derechos y las libertades encarnados por la revolución. Nadie presagiaba que aquel septiembre de 1868 quedaría marcado por la sangre de los vecinos del barrio extramuros de la Corredera, víctimas del desafuero de las tropas realistas. La resistencia local frente a las tropas isabelinas del general Nanetti se convirtió en el símbolo del nuevo régimen triunfante tras el exilio de Isabel II. El paso del tiempo, empero, había vaciado de contenido el único acto cívico que se venía realizando anualmente en su recuerdo, todavía hasta nuestros días: la marcha hasta el cementerio de San Miguel y la ofrenda floral ante la tumba de los caídos, junto al nombre de varias calles y el eco de unos cañones artesanos que de poco sirvieron, pero nada se sabía de los líderes protagonistas de aquella sublevación (José Fronsky, Vicente Valle, Domingo Guijo, Aniano Gómez, Primo Comendador, entre otros) o del valor de los hechos bejaranos en el contexto nacional. Para dar luz académica al suceso histórico se organizaron estas jornadas universitarias, que se desarrollaron entre el 26 y el 28 de septiembre y convocaron a prestigiosos investigadores del ámbito nacional. Esta obra recoge ocho ponencias y dos comunicaciones, que abordan aspectos como el desarrollo de la conciencia obrera, la importancia de la industria textil, la educación y la música, la formación de una memoria colectiva, el análisis de los acontecimientos vividos a nivel nacional y local, los cañones de Víctor Gorzo, o el papel de otras localidades cercanas como Hervás (Cáceres) o Baños de Montemayor.
