“L’inaudito e crudelissimo racconto della prigionia capracottese e della miracolosa liberazione” porta il lettore nell’Alto Molise sul finire del XVII sec.: la storia è quella di 41 pastori evangelici che, condannati per tradimento a Bratislava nel 1674, e dunque vessati, torturati ed incarcerati, vengono spediti a Napoli – scortati da militari germanici – per esser venduti, come schiavi, agli spagnoli che hanno bisogno di braccia per combattere in Sicilia contro i francesi. La compagnia dei 41 disgraziati e la colonna militare che li sorveglia partono in convoglio il 18 marzo 1675 dalle prigioni slovacco-ungheresi per raggiungere dapprima Trieste; qui vengono imbarcati per Pescara e da lì, a piedi, attraverso l’Appennino centrale, arrivare al porto di Napoli. La cittadina di Capracotta, che si trova tra Pescara e Napoli, rappresenta una tappa importante del loro viaggio poiché lì avviene la prima evasione, quella di Giorgio Lani, il 1° maggio 1675. Ad Isernia fuggono invece Giovanni Simonide e Tobia Masnizio i quali, compiendo a ritroso il tragitto, si ritrovano ancora a Capracotta dove il 4 maggio vengono arrestati dalle guardie cittadine e sbattuti in galera per sei settimane, fino alla loro liberazione, avvenuta il 13 giugno 1675.
