La città è Terni, a cui Portelli ha dedicato decenni di ricerche nell’ambito della storia orale, intervistando centinaia di persone, studiandone l’anima più profonda; in queste pagine prova ora a tracciarne l’itinerario degli ultimi dieci anni, «dal rosso al nero». Terni è stata la prima città importante fuori del Nord a scegliere un’amministrazione leghista, ma anche la prima a sconfiggere in modo inopinato una coalizione di destra guidata da Fratelli d’Italia che sembrava destinata a un facile trionfo: in questo senso, si configura come una sorta di laboratorio, in cui la storia nazionale si manifesta in forme più estreme e clamorose. Processi di deindustrializzazione, crisi della sinistra, disorientamento culturale e identitario, crisi ambientale e sanitaria – ma anche debolezza di una destra senza spessore, litigiosa, culturalmente inadeguata, campanilista ma sospinta al potere da paure e insicurezze (criminalità, droga, immigrazione, revisionismo storico): la storia di questa città che invecchia, ma che ha perso il suo fulcro («Terni è una città che ha dichiarato guerra alla propria storia», denuncia uno degli intervistati) e fatica a immaginarsi un futuro, rischia di essere sempre di più la storia dell’intero paese.

27 marzo 1985. Ezio Tarantelli cancella gli appunti sulla lavagna dell’aula 3 della facoltà di Economia della Sapienza di Roma. La lezione è finita, saluta gli studenti, raggiunge il parcheggio e sale sulla sua Citroen rossa. Lo aspettano in due, gli sparano in pieno volto. Sul tergicristallo rimane la rivendicazione delle Brigate rosse. Settanta pagine per dire che il salario si difende con il fucile. Tarantelli, il brillante allievo di Franco Modigliani, il consulente del servizio studi della Banca d’Italia, il presidente dell’Istituto di studi e economia del lavoro della Cisl, l’economista che «voleva lavoro per tutti», muore così, a 44 anni, crivellato di colpi. Carole Beebe Tarantelli, psicoanalista, femminista, docente alla Sapienza e poi parlamentare, che di quell’uomo era la moglie, negli anni ha dovuto arginare il grumo di sofferenza enorme che questa tragedia le ha provocato: «Non ho avuto più indietro la mia vita.
