Using an enormous range of Cuban and U.S. sources--from archival records and oral interviews to popular magazines, novels, and motion pictures--Perez reveals a powerful web of everyday, bilateral connections between the United States and Cuba and shows how U.S. cultural forms had a critical influence on the development of Cubans' sense of themselves as a people and as a nation. He also articulates the cultural context for the revolution that erupted in Cuba in 1959. Desde que se inició en el periodismo, cuando era un veinteañero, Jorge Mañach tuvo una valoración muy positiva de esa noble pugna de pareceres que es la polémica. La concebía como una agradable charla, como un coloquio estimulante que permite desarrollar el ingenio y contribuye a ejercitar las opiniones, al tonificar las mejor pensadas. El germen de la inconformidad, sostenía, es necesario para el progreso de las ideas. Eso lo llevó, en algunas ocasiones, a provocar la discusión sobre temas que creía pertinente y necesario tratar, como fue el caso del fraternal intercambio acerca de la novela cubana que Rafael Suárez Solís y él mantuvieron en los años veinte. Tuvo por eso una actitud hospitalaria a todos los pareceres adversos, con tal de que estos saludaran antes de entrar. Pensaba que la civil y noble discrepancia de opiniones hay que respetarla siempre, pues es algo propio de personas civilizadas. Se holgaba de las polémicas honrosas y corteses que tuvo con interlocutores inteligentes. En ese grupo presumo que estaban las que sostuvo con Medardo Vitier, Manuel del Riego, José Vasconcelos. Sin embargo, no tenía reparos en responder a personas que le escribían al diario en el cual colaboraba en ese momento, y lo hizo más de una vez. Esto, pese a saber que las polémicas en medios periodísticos pueden ser un espectáculo divertido para los lectores, pero raramente conducen al esclarecimiento de la verdad y, en cambio, abren entre los contendientes un agrio vacío. Por supuesto, no todas eran ingratas ni ociosas, y alguna luz y no poca animación cordial salía de ellas. Hay que lamentar que el periodismo lo obligó en algunas ocasiones a descender hasta el arroyo. Al respecto, conviene apuntar que era consciente de que uno no debe ocuparse de los mordiscos en letra de molde de gente irresponsable, o de quienes no perdonan que se ignore su genialidad. Pero de igual modo, sabía que no hay enemigo pequeño, ni difamación de la cual no quede alguna huella. Por eso respondió a ataques y juicios hostiles, aunque eso le provocase fastidio y lo forzara a apartarse de faenas más importantes y constructivas.
