Bruno Maderna was one of the most influential composers in the twentieth century. He was the eldest of the group of Italian composers born in the 1920s (along with Berio, Nono, Donatoni, and others) who began their career shortly before the second World War and were able to exploit the opportunities offered by the new world that emerged in the post-war years. Maderna’s story is quite unique. He rose to fame early in life as a child prodigy and his exceptional talent was soon noticed by Gian Francesco Malipiero, who stimulated his interest in ancient music, a passion that remained constant even when the European avant-garde insisted that new music should start from year zero. After first approaching “classic” dodecaphony, his musical style then tended toward total serialism and “open form.” In his last years he developed a particular interest for the theater. Satyricon was born in Tanglewood in a short version and later achieved notable success worldwide. His work as a conductor made him particularly sensitive to the reaction of the public, leading him to carefully calibrate his approach to composition without being swayed by fashionable ideals or philosophies. Despite his warm and outgoing nature, Maderna rarely expressed his personal views in writing or in interviews. Many of the biographical details given here are taken from his correspondence and from reports of his travels and engagements across the world, which took him as far as the United States, Iran South America, and Japan.

Con l’aggressione della Russia all’Ucraina nel febbraio del 2022, i venti di guerra sono tornati a soffiare sull’Europa, rompendo l’ininterrotto periodo di relativa pace successivo alla fine dell’ultimo conflitto mondiale. Anche i conflitti iugoslavi degli anni novanta del secolo scorso avevano abituato ancor più l’Europa occidentale a considerare la guerra come un fenomeno con cui confrontarsi, certo, ma al di là dei propri confini. Nei decenni e nei secoli precedenti, tuttavia, la guerra è stata una realtà che ha riguardato ogni generazione di esseri umani, plasmando la società e gli individui e lasciando un segno sul loro modo di stabilire rapporti culturali, oltre che di vita. L’interdipendenza europea, che proprio nell’arte celebrò i traguardi più appariscenti nel dialogo fra i propri protagonisti, non impedì che periodicamente si manifestassero fratture violente, mettendo a dura prova i legami tra i popoli. Dalla fine del Medioevo in poi lo scontro tra le nazioni è stato costante, e regolarmente è sfociato in conflitti armati più o meno duraturi direttamente rispecchiati nelle testimonianze artistiche. Ne abbiamo un costante riflesso nelle espressioni della musica: in quelle destinate a sostenere le armate in combattimento, in quelle che ne celebravano le vittorie.Il suono della guerra è un’ampia rassegna critica di come la musica abbia rappresentato, accompagnato, sostenuto, e anche denunciato i conflitti armati nella storia. Seguendo una cronologia libera e mai pedissequa, la narrazione prende le mosse dal Rinascimento e arriva fino alle soglie del terzo millennio, attraversando battaglie, scontri, rivoluzioni e repressioni europee e mondiali, in continuo e fitto dialogo con un’imponente raccolta di documenti che raccontano i complessi rapporti tra gli strumenti della musica e gli strumenti della guerra.Una ricca rassegna storica per capire come la musica può entrare in guerra e come la guerra può comporre la musica.
