This edited volume presents, for the first time, a history of anthropology regarding not only the well-known European and American traditions, but also lesser-known traditions, extending its scope beyond the Western world. It focuses on the results of these traditions in the present. Taking into account the distinction between empire-building and nation-building anthropology, introduced by G. Stocking and taken up by U. Hannerz, the book investigates different histories of anthropology, especially in ex-colonial and marginal contexts. It highlights how the hegemonic anthropologies have been accepted and assimilated in local contexts, which approaches have been privileged by institutions and academies in different locations, how the anthropological approach has been modelled and adapted according to specific knowledge requirements related to the cultural features of different areas, and which schools emerge as the most consolidated today. Each chapter presents a “cultural history” of one of the historical-cultural and geo-political contexts that influenced and produced the specific disciplinary traditions. The chapters highlight the local contributions to the discipline, the influences that the world centres have on the peripheries, but also the ways in which the peripheries have “learned from the centres” in order to re-elaborate meaningful or otherwise recognisable disciplinary lines.

El deseo de entender a los demás y sus mundos no es solo una ambición del antropólogo, sino también de todos aquellos profesionales que, centrados en las relaciones cara a cara, necesitan tanto un conocimiento “intelectualmente crítico” de los propios destinatarios y de su mundo como una conciencia crítica de sus efectos en la interacción con ellos. También la inquietud de quedarse “desarmados” y vulnerables o demasiado involucrados en sus propias prácticas y categorías, en sus propios mundos. Este libro ilustra una vía ejemplar que ofrece la investigación antropológica, asumiendo esa inquietud y vulnerabilidad como constitutivas del gesto de entender. No se trata solo de corregir el modelo lineal de observación, de colocase lo más posible dentro del mundo observado, sino de pasar a un modelo circular, de reconocer al otro no solo como el que responde las preguntas del antropólogo sino como el que a su vez hace preguntas. Lo que está en juego no es el papel que el investigador quiere asumir, sino la identidad que le atribuyen aquellos con quienes interactúa. ¿Quién eres tú para tus interlocutores? El antropólogo no busca informaciones sino que establece lazos emergentes. Esas preguntas estuvieron en el centro del modo de pensar el trabajo de campo del antropólogo francés Gérard Althabe, pionero del llamado “giro interpretativo” de los años setenta. Fava retoma y desmenuza esas reflexiones confrontánolas con la tradición de la observación participante, con el análisis institucional y la noción de “implicación” y con las proposiciones del filósofo escocés Alasdair MacIntyre. Su propio trabajo de campo, finalmente, clarifica los alcances y desafíos que esta perspectiva genera. “Ferdinando Fava muestra de modo ejemplar aquello que su acercamiento personal y profundamente original ha obtenido de las enseñanzas de Gérard Althabe. Ha sabido demostrarnos con fuerza y elegancia las líneas directrices de una senda metodológica y teórica acerca de la cual piensa con justicia que es más que nunca esencial en la definición del ejercicio antropológico”. Este libro desafía a construir y repensar el rol de la inundación desde lo urbano y lo social, a partir de la perspectiva del actor. Las consecuencias que generan las inundaciones en zonas urbanas producen daños costosos y efectos indirectos severos, debido a la concentración de la población, infraestructura y otro tipo de elementos que hacen vulnerable su entorno. El autor se pregunta acerca del rol que han tenido las inundaciones en la ciudad de Miramar en el relato histórico de sus pobladores, a partir de la reconstrucción de lo sucedido desde los últimos años de la década de 1970 en la ciudad. Para ello, busca desandar sus experiencias, poniendo de relieve la situación de vulnerabilidad del lugar y cómo se potencia o no la capacidad de respuesta frente a inundaciones. En el libro queda la certeza de que una inundación que afecta a una población no es un hecho fortuito, sino que surge debido a la seria de vulnerabilidades que se asocian a la amenaza cuyo impacto conlleva a una serie de consecuencias. En la ciudad de Miramar una de las consecuencias más importantes e impactantes ha sido la del proceso migratorio que se generó, el hecho de que se viera afectada la zona produjo impactos irreversibles en la estructura económica y social, a decir del autor. Los relatos dejan entrever los procesos de lucha, éxodo y adaptación a los que se vieron inmersos los habitantes de Miramar, quienes son los afectados de estas historias y fueron los que perdieron todo ante cada inundación.
