In questo saggio storico gli autori tentano di ricostruire scientificamente un'accurata biografia del "Gesù della storia". Nerbo della tesi esposta nel libro è la classificazione di Gesù come un discendente della famiglia dei "Boethi", cui sarebbero appartenuti numerosi altri personaggi evangelici. Tra questi sono annoverati Nicodemo, Marta e Maria di Betania, Lazzaro, nonché la madre di Gesù, Maria I Boethus, una delle mogli di Erode il Grande, che nel 5 a.C. sarebbe fuggita in Egitto con Giuseppe in seguito a una congiura ordita contro il re. Il libro mostra come Gesù potrebbe essere sopravvissuto alla sua condanna a morte, tanto che le fonti dell'epoca ci narrano la storia di un personaggio, Gesù bar Gamala, che sembrerebbe corrispondere al Gesù dei vangeli. La famiglia dei Boethi sembrerebbe inoltre legarsi alla dinastia oniade, cui appartenevano una classe di personaggi definiti "Giusti" e "portatori di pioggia", come Onia V Giusto e i suoi discendenti: Abba Hilkiah, Giovanni Battista, Nicodemo Boethus, Giacomo il Giusto e altri esponenti della famiglia di Gesù. Nel saggio si approfondisce l'analisi su numerosi altri argomenti, come le questioni relative all'illegittimità di Gesù e al suo stato maritale.

La tesi sostenuta, rivoluzionaria ed “eretica” per l’epoca, era quella di considerare la figura di Gesù come un personaggio storico e sotto una luce umana e terrena. L’autore esamina pertanto la nascita, la predicazione e la morte del Cristo con lo sguardo, sempre partecipe e appassionato, dello storico e del filologo attento ai fatti e alle fonti. Concepita come parte centrale di una più ampia e successiva Storia delle origini del Cristianesimo, la Vita di Gesù conobbe un grandissimo successo di pubblico diffondendo in pochi mesi sessantamila copie e superando nelle vendite persino Madame Bovary. «Gesù nacque a Nazareth, piccola città della Galilea, che prima di lui non ebbe celebrità. In tutta la sua vita egli fu designato col nome di «Nazareno».» Ernest Renan nacque a Tréguier, in Bretagna, nel 1823. Avviatosi alla vita ecclesiastica, abbandonò il seminario nel 1854 in seguito a una crisi intellettuale e religiosa. Studioso di letterature semitiche, fu docente di lingua ebraica, caldea e siriaca al Collège de France. Pubblicò vari volumi di storia religiosa e di lingue semitiche. Morì nel 1892.
