Szyja Opatowski, surnommé Samy, a dix-sept ans lorsque les troupes allemandes envahissent la Pologne en septembre 1939. Son arrivée, illégale en France, est encore révélatrice de sa pugnacité et de son intelligence des situations. He enlisted in the Austro-Hungarian Army during World War I and served in several theaters, including the Carpathian Front, where living conditions were harsh. "Elisabeth Kasza was a nomad in more ways than one. During the war she was deported and sent from one concentration camp to another, then went into exile afterwards. After becoming an actress, she travelled within herself, from character to character. Elisabeth was born in Kaposvár, in southwestern Hungary, into a family of Jewish origin that had converted to Protestantism. Under the Nazi yoke, as Jews she and her parents were confined in a ghetto and later deported. Elisabeth voluntarily shared with them the fate of the 440,000 Hungarian Jews sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau between mid-May and early July 1944. Like most of the deportees, her father was murdered as soon as he arrived. Then Elisabeth was cruelly separated from her mother and transferred to the camps of Bergen-Belsen, Duderstadt and Terezin. After the Liberation, Elisabeth went to Budapest, where she was treated for myocarditis brought on by malnutrition in the camps. Fleeing the communist dictatorship, she wanted to settle in the United States but stayed in France, where she became a stage and screen actress. Roger Fichtenberg est né en 1921 dans le XIe arrondis-sement au sein d’une famille parisienne depuis plusieurs générations. En juin 1940, devant l’avancée des troupes allemandes, les Fichtenberg se réfugient à Lapalisse, à 25 km au nord-est de Vichy (Allier). Roger entre aux Éclaireurs israélites de France (EIF) en mai 1941. Suite aux rafles de Juifs dans la zone dite « libre » (août 1942), il fonde avec d’autres la branche clandestine du mouvement, la « Sixième » : son totem, « Jaguar », sera son nom de guerre. À partir de Moissac (Tarn_x001A_et_x001A_Garonne), quartier général des EIF, l’organisation clandestine met en oeuvre le sauvetage de milliers d’enfants juifs. Réalisation de faux papiers, recherche de planques, convoyage et passages des frontières suisse et espagnole, diffusion de tracts clandestins... Roger brave les dangers en sillonnant la zone Sud. Intégré à l’état-major des FFI du Lot_x001A_et_x001A_Garonne, il participe à la libération d’Agen où il occupe la préfecture (19 août 1944), et contribue au rétablissement des institutions républicaines. À partir de ses notes des années de guerre, Roger Fichtenberg nous fait partager le cheminement exemplaire d’un jeune homme juif dans la Résistance.

Jacob Alsztejn est issu d’une famille polonaise émigrée à Paris en 1937. Après avoir échappé à plusieurs rafles, il est arrêté par la police française le 24 juillet 1942 pour avoir essayé de se soustraire violemment à un contrôle d’identité. Muni de faux papiers, il n’est pas immédiatement identifié comme Juif. Lors de son procès, Jacob réclame la peine de prison la plus lourde, pensant échapper au pire. À sa sortie, plusieurs mois après, il est livré à la Gestapo puis interné au camp de Drancy parce que Juif. Déporté à Auschwitz II-Birkenau, Jacob est sélectionné pour le travail forcé. Là, il retrouve son frère, Haïm, déporté un an plus tôt. À bout de force, Jacob échappe in extremis à la chambre à gaz, avant d’être affecté à un Kommando chargé de déblayer les ruines du ghetto de Varsovie, sa ville natale. Devant l’avancée des troupes soviétiques, Jacob et ses codétenus sont forcés de parcourir à pied les 120 km qui les séparent de Lodz. Transféré à Dachau puis au camp d’Allach, il y retrouvera à nouveau son frère avant d’être libéré par l’armée américaine fin avril 1945.

Un enfant juif polonais survivant de la Shoah est une exception et son parcours va de pair. Ainsi Henri, né à Demblin en 1933, a connu l'invasion nazie, les persécutions, la première déportation des Juifs de sa ville dont sa soeur et son frère sont victimes, le ghetto de Varsovie, puis la disparition de son père convoqué à la Kommandantur et la seconde déportation à laquelle il se soustrait de justesse. Il n'échappe pourtant pas au camp de travail de Demblin, à celui de Czestochowa où il est déporté avec son grand-père, et au camp de concentration de Buchenwald. Enfin, il vit la libération au camp-ghetto de Terezin, au terme d'un transport de trois semaines auquel son aïeul chéri ne survit pas. Après guerre, Henri, rétabli du typhus, retrouve sa mère avec qui il parvient à quitter la Pologne communiste pour Paris. Ce n'est que 50 ans plus tard qu'il accepte, pour ses petits-enfants, de raconter sa « guerre ». Le résultat est un cahier d'écolier manuscrit, bouleversant, où il retrace, avec un style poignant de sincérité, ce qu'il a vu et ressenti à hauteur de l'enfant qu'il était. Sans éluder les blancs de sa mémoire, il donne des flashs, analyse ce qu'il ressent, ce qu'il comprend et ce qui lui échappe parce qu'il est un enfant. Un témoignage probe, d'une force unique.
