Dos partes complementarias componen este libro. La primera introduce y sitúa, en el contexto de la época y de una publicación periódica El Museo Universal, la tarea conjunta de dos hermanos artistas: Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer (1836-1870) y Valeriano Bécquer (1834-1870). A la vez que intenta elaborar unas pautas de lectura, perfila las articulaciones problemáticas de este diálogo peculiar entre texto e imagen. Las aportaciones de Valeriano consisten tanto en dibujos hechos a partir de lienzos que realizó como pensionado por el Ministerio de Fomento, como en dibujos menos conocidos que ilustran acontecimientos de actualidad o dan una visión satírica de costumbres o comportamientos sociales propios de los años 1860. En cuanto a Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, si bien solía acompañar los dibujos de su hermano, desarrolló una labor de mayor amplitud. En la segunda parte, el curioso y el estudioso encontrarán reproducidos los grabados y algunos textos de difícil acceso, pormenorizados para facilitar su utilización en otros contextos. A la hora de valorar la creación artística y literaria en la era isabelina, los historiadores del arte y filólogos hallarán en ellos documentos relevantes.

The Yes of the Girls is a comedy about Doña Paquita, a 16-year-old girl forced by her mother Doña Irene to marry Don Diego, a sensitive and wealthy 59-year-old gentleman. However, he ignores that Doña Paquita is in love with a certain 'Don Felix', who is actually called Don Carlos, and is Don Diego's nephew. With this love triangle as an argument, the play is developed, whose main theme is the oppression of girls forced to obey their mother and enter into an unequal marriage and in this case with a great age difference between the spouses.
